drive shaft questions

Post by CraigB » Tue 19 Feb, 2013 7:40 pm

Funny how a long trip makes you think about these things! The universals in my 1969 car i expect are 'staked' but noticed online that these unis are available "but may need special mercedes tools". Anybody had experience with these? Also are the centre and back ones the same?

Craig, Some answers

I have a spare driveshaft that I plan to use when i temporarily remove my ZF box to make some repairs on it. As you know, the shaft used with the std box is longer than the one used with the ZF. I replaced the universals on this spare driveshaft. I did need to use a hydraulic press and an arbor to remove and replace the joints. They are the same and it was not an especially tough job with the press. I can see where this would be somewhat difficult though w/o the hydraulic press. Hope this helps--George, Brisbane

Excellent, thanks Garry. I have had a bit of a strange noise that i have narrowed down to being somewhere from the output shaft of the gearbox back –ie. if I roll fast enough down a hill with the engine off and in neutral I can get it to make the noise. My best explanation is that it is like having a cricket in the car but not that intrusive, just annoying. And it is only under certain load situations, so while at faster speeds it will do it in neutral, if it is loaded by acceleration or deceleration it is not there but you will hear it by rolling on and off throttle. Had a myriad of experts look at it and posted at least a couple of times here and other forums but nothing has checked out. Experts have usually come up with the advice – turn your radio up! And the car has done some very long trips and very hard track time etc and no ill effects so not too worried. However with parts availability sometimes being a problem on the road, I will grab a couple of unis, new flex coupling and pack the centre bearing and holder I have had sitting around for a while…… and that should probably mean that I wont need them! And of course I will probably have the broadest forum to have gathered in Australia in a few weeks to discuss the matter!

Thanks again for your help.

Craig,

It is more likely the flexible disc needs replacement. Not a hard or expensive job.

See you in Canberra. Taking the car for a 1000km drive this weekend to run in the new engine and bed every thing down before Canberra.

In the below threads is how I changed the U-joint on My W123 and what I did about the Staking.
What ever U-joint you use to replace it you need to find out how far the Bearing Caps are spaced.

My Benz World post with all of the U-joint sources.

At the time of the U-joint replacement I did not replace the Flex Discs. However, I did that last Year and they needed it as they were cracked and on their way out.
