Steel rims for W108

Hi,
Just seeing if anyone has, or knows of any 14x6 steel rims for a W108 280SE. I have the Bundt wheels fitted to a recently purchased vehicle, but also have the hub caps, but need some rims to fit them to as an option. I'm in the Sydney area, and would be happy with or without tyres.
Thanks
Matthew

Hi Matthew,

I have a set that I removed from my W108 that I would be willing to sell.

I am located in Picton, NSW.

Where are you?

Kind Regards

Bill

Thanks Bill. New to the forum - sorry about that. I'm just in Richmond NSW so not too far from you. Can you Private Message me details and a price, and does anyone know which W108 models (if any) came out with the 6.5 inch wide wheels?
Matthew

I'm not sure if the PM works until you have 5 posts approved but you might be able to email. Its part of the software to get around spammers and even though clearly you are not, we can't just switch it off. A couple of posts, photos of your car etc, reply to this and you are there.

6.5 were on the V8 cars as far as I know. You didn't say what year but being a 280 i think they all had the one piece hubcap. If so, 6.5 wheels off the W116 V8's - 350/450 se/sel will fit - I think they even have the same 108..... part number. They do have a date stamp on them between the bolt holes.

Wow - thanks Craig. Yes she's a '71 280SE 3.5, and yes the hub caps I have are one piece (with dress rim). So, to stay true to the vehicle, I should be looking for 6.5's..working on the picture attachment - be patient...

That's great. So yes yours would have had 6.5 and pretty sure v8 W116, i think W107 and possibly even early 126 are the same, although V8 126 on steelies is less common. Some have fins behind the round holes, I think to help brake cooling and others don't. I'm not clear about what did or didn't have them. In my collection i have seen more without the fins. Better experts on here than me that might chip in. All will work though and depends on how much you use the car and how hard you use the brakes to be too worried about all that.

Thanks for that - yes 116 engine. to be honest, if I'm doing any decent driving, I'll leave the Bundt's on - they are after all a better wheel. The steelies would just possibly be for more formal occasions. With the fins behind the holes, my guess (knowing a little bit about other areas of German engineering) would be that they were put there for a reason, and not normally to save money, but possibly some other engineering efficiency...

And just confirming, yours has a M116 engine - I was talking about W116 chassis that is the 1972 to about 1980 s class - 280/350/450 - but the V8 cars had the 6.5. One more post and you should have the PM problem fixed!

Matthew,

That is a really impressive hood ornament on your car. I always thought merely driving a W108 was enough to attract the ladies, but you seem to have gone in for a bit of enhancement ...
