Steering column switch plug wiring 1972 280SE 3.5

Post by rutger kohler » Wed 05 Jul, 2017 3:24 pm

Hi, I have removed my steering column switch to repair the LH indicator mechanism which wouldn't stay up. In removing the steering column switch it is necessary to open the 14 pin plug, under the dash, and remove the wires and pins, to get the wiring loom up through the steering column outer sleeve.

After opening the plug up I took photos to mark where each coloured wire/pin went and carried on with the job. Alas when I downloaded the photos they were blurred because I held the camera in one hand and the plug in the other. I had a copy of the lacing for this plug/socket out of the Big Blue Book page 54-1/10 so didn't worry about it too much, however I have discovered that, although the wiring on my car is original, the arrangment on my plug is not the same as the BBB and so I am stuck.

Has anyone got a drawing or schematic that is different to the BBB 54-1/10 please? I think it only the last 4 wire/pin layout that are different on the end farthest away from where all the wires enter the plug. i can see, from the photos that one wire at that very end is black with blue/violet coding and the other is black with green violet coding

Here goes that question again! - where are you located, if its in your signature it can help a lot. If you are in Adelaide I would say just come around and have a look at one that is together. If elsewhere I might be able to direct you to a 108 owner local to you. If you live somewhere remote then I will go looking for stuff or maybe someone else can just easily put their hand on that sort of stuff.

Hi Craig, thanks for replying, I live in Pukekohe, about 60km south from downtown Auckland. I think I might know someone who has a complete loom out of a car, but waiting for as reply from him.

That makes sense then! See how you go - busy today but i can probably take some photos if that helps. You might get a response before then of people that know just where to put their hands on the right diagrams.

Hi Craig, would like photos anyway if and when you have time please. Interesting, the colour code wires at the start of the plug (the end where the wire come out) appear to be the same as the BBB, it is probably only the last 3 on both sides that the sequence is difference.
