The 1989 6litre SEC widebody in the top link sold for Euro 295,500 (inclusive of buyers fee)
That = AUD $331,000 yes you are reading that right AUD$331k
This coupe has the original 32v M117 engine
That would have to beat the record prices they have been achieving in USA auctions over the past couple of years when they occasionally come up for sale.

The 1990 6litre SEC widebody with the hybrid M119-960 engine
(meaning M119 block & heads with M117 crank & rods & custom 100mm pistons & M117 timing cover/dizzi and air-cleaner)
Appears it was either passed in at auction or private buyer who does not want any info disclosed

88 Black Euro 560SEC 220kw
89 Midnight Blue Euro 560SEL hydro 220kw AMG Kitted

Perhaps you converted it to US$ instead of AU$ Kim.

What I find interesting is that houses that could have been bought in Australia, for the price that standard 560SEC's were selling for, back in 1986, are worth a lot more today than the widebody sold for at auction. It just goes to show how expensive they actually were in their time and the AMG's cost heaps more than the standard cars!

I thought I would expand on what I wrote in my previous post and do the math for those who might be interested.

The price of an Australian delivered Mercedes 560SEC in 1986 was $179,286.

The median prices of houses in 1986 and how many could be bought for the price of an ’86 560SEC are as follow:

Sydney - $98,325 - 1.82
Melbourne - $82,000 - 2.18
Brisbane - $63,000 - 2.84
Adelaide - $73,500 - 2.44
Perth - $58,000 - 3.09
Hobart - $56,725 - 3.16
Darwin - $87,500 - 2.05
Canberra - $91,175 - 1.97

The average median price of housing in the capital cities of Australia for 1986 was, therefore: $76,278

So, an average of 2.35 houses could have been bought in Australia for the price of a Mercedes 560SEC in 1986.

Now, the current median price for houses, throughout the capital cities of Australia, is as follows:

Sydney - $795,509
Melbourne - $636,048
Brisbane - $494,345
Adelaide - $430,711
Perth - $441,920
Hobart - $457,785
Darwin - $412,940
Canberra - $596,933

The average median price for a house in the capital cities of Australia is, therefore, currently: $533,274.

So, if we compare the purchasing power of the price of a standard Australian delivered Mercedes 560SEC in 1986, where, on average, 2.35 houses could have been bought in the capital cities of Australia, it would cost the equivalent of $1,253,194 to buy one today!

The price that 560SEC’s were selling for, here, in their days, given the purchasing power of the Australian dollar then, is remarkable, to say the least. In a couple of years, all of the C126’s ever made will become classic cars (i.e. 30+ years old), and, I think, everyone who’s ever driven one will agree that they’re probably the most drivable classic cars ever made, and, of course, they’re not making any more of them, so they will, no doubt, continue to rise in value.

Sorry, KimB, but I just couldn’t contain myself!

Hopefully, I got the math right.
