Stereo - Rear Parcel Shelf Speaker Tray Designs

Post by mrsecman » Fri 09 Mar, 2018 1:50 am

All.
I'll be running a project in Winter to replace the rear speakers with new larger cones with bass (no sub, not needed for this project), therefore rendering the old corner speakers redundant and disconnected. I'll be removing the parcel shelf, cleaning it up and fabricating an MDF board, with cover, and holes and pre cut screw holes to fit directly over the decommissioned first aid kit and tool trays.

This will jack right into the new Alpine head unit installed last year, and new Italian front speakers in the existing dash compartments.

Has anyone done this sort of project before? Ideas and thoughts?

Lots of people have changed the rear parcel shelf and other speakers.

If you alter the metal part of the rear parcel shelf - drilling extra bolt holes or making the speaker holes larger.
I did this to accommodate some high quality Alpine speakers in my W124.

Later when I went to get a RWC for that car an overzealous, pedantic RWC inspector informed me that it was illegal to alter the metal rear parcel shelf - something about body strength integrity. :bs: I cleaned the holes up and covered them up and then went elsewhere to get the RWC.

Only yesterday I finished installing a swing down amp rack that I bolted to the underside of the parcel tray using rivnuts ( a treaded insert applied like a poprivet) They work great keep them in mind for securing your MDF , A lick of paint and the untrained eye wouldn't know there not factory. I take it your using 6x9 speakers, you can buy carpeted speaker pods for little $$$ at soopercheap an the like, forgoes the need to be cutting holes in your parcelshelf.

May not be applicable to you, but heard a number of stories from Victorian RWC testers. They are really cracking down on modifications to existing parcel shelves like cutting holes in a parcel shelf that never had speaker holes or people fabricating new parcel shelves. Common to hear testers stating you need an Engineers certificate for any mods.

Man that's really nice. It would be ideal to get to that quality level. Might just keep it at 2x 6x9's - but... what speakers are those? You said Alpine? Would be very interested to explore that. Mind you I don't want to fuss about with additional cabling.

The front replacements will be an Italian brand through a good installer here in Adelaide, so I'll run with that. But like to know more about your post.

Although we don't have regular checks in SA, i have heard similar stories when cars have gone to Regency Park to be checked for whatever reason - trying to remember but I think it was an import SEC checking for kids seat anchors and pulled it up on the cutting for speakers. The problem with those speaker boxes you buy is they have no volume like a boot cavity and so you don't get the same nice sounding bass out of them. The first aid kit box etc still provide big holes that I am sure you could line up to use your mdf board to mount and not need to cut anything. I haven't done Gen 1, but on Gen 2 I have mounted good quality 6" round speakers in the angled speaker mounts, clearing the original covers and it is deep enough to fit the huge magnets on these 'response' speakers. With a bit of fiddling you can also fit the 4" ones in the front under the original covers. All looks nice and original but the sound is anything but.

That pic of the nice factory look rear parcel shelf mod is one i had saved from the net some yrs ago, so no info on what speakers are below those covers but they are a bit on the large size for the shelf but if next size down was installed they would have looked better in my own opinion.
I few guys have tried keeping the storage boxes and installing the speakers in the lids (probably cut the bottom out of the boxes) but it is much better the use an MDF board and cut to shape and covered in appropriate material.
Here are some random pics of more modded parcel shelfs
The best is the the AMG supplied one back in the day for the SEL

That design with the flat neat board area, central parcel compartment for first aid, is a great looking modern design. I might try going for something like that. Another Winter project... Will keep you all posted!
