Standard Economy Switch - Australian Deliveries

Post by ngruzevs » Thu 15 Feb, 2018 4:27 pm

Just wondering if any Australian delivered cars had the Standard Economy transmission switch?

My mate is looking at an 88 560SEL, seller says it's Australian delivered, but has the switch.

Economy on a 560? :laughing5: :laughing5: :laughing5:

Back in the olden days when 560’s were new, some were delivered with lots of options. You bought the car off the floor rather than ordering one up. They were extremely expensive and to justify the costs lots of options were included. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were Oz delivered cars with that option

Economy mode means that the transmission will not fall back to first gear under full throttle with the kickdown. Also the shift points were delayed under sport mode.
It’s a better system than using the shift lever to hold the transmission in first gear and manoever it back and forty to second gear.

Thanks for your response. I was aware back there were quite a few orderable options, but hadn't seen a locally delivered 560 with that option.

Guess at the end of the day, VIN will confirm weather Australian delivered or not.

Hi,
afaik this switch was never an option, it came as standard. Completely useless, similar to the economy gauge :laughing6: ... I have the switch in the SL and I guess it's already firmly rusted into the S position

Neither does my 420SE.

I understand it was useless, but there doesn’t appear to be too many Gen 2 Australian delivered cars with this feature.

I have it on my '87 Scottish delivered 560 ECE and I agree there is very little difference using it - unlike my E60 530i which turns into a beast (for an n/a inline 6) in sport.
