colours for C126 & other paint-related Qs

Post by OzBenzHead » Mon 15 Jan, 2018 4:26 pm

G’day, fellow Benzheads!

1. Wheel colour

My wheels (the round things, not the whole car) need repainting.

What is the correct factory colour and paint for them? I would rather they didn’t scream “look at me” – well, no more than the car itself does LOL. (Car is a very subtle warm-white pearl, with the pearl in the clear coat. Not original, but it’s how I bought it. The original was champagne metallic – YUK!)

2. Bumpers and side skirts colour

At the same time, I plan to repaint the side skirts and tatty bumpers. As mine have been already repainted in the deep past, before I acquired the SEC, it’s difficult to tell if the lighter silver under the newer, peeling, darker silver (which I believe to be the wrong colour by factory standard issue) is correct or also the result of previous “tarting up”.

Is the correct colour for the bumpers and skirts identical to standard alloy-wheel colour or radically different?

3. Under-bits colour/s

What is/are the factory standard colour/s of items such as front and rear subframes, axles, steering parts, tailshaft, springs etc.? Are they all black (as are mine – unsure how original it all is) or were other colours employed (factory)?

Should I decide to repaint those parts, can anyone comment on the suitability of the POR-15 range of paints, or suggest better / more appropriate paints?

4. Floor pan colour (underneath)

What is the factory colour for the underbody (floor pan)? Mine is currently grey.

5. Inside of wheel arches colour

Should these be the same as the underside of the floor pan, or should they be body colour?

6. Paint protection (against stone chips)

Some years ago, on either this forum or W116.org, there were posts about a removable clear protective film that one could apply to the nose and other areas vulnerable to stone-shipping. (I gather it was a king of thick-ish “GladWrap”.)

Despite searching, I can no longer find that information.

Can anyone have experience of this treatment or can otherwise enlighten me on the matter?

That’s all for now.

Thanks :-)

For starters i will have a go at just a couple of these - more questions though, being 83 are they Bundt wheels? Pretty sure someone has quoted that colour in a post - maybe search on bundt wheel colour etc. - I think i have seen bumper colour too at some point.

I was going to say with stonechips, you can get plasticisers that they put into 2 pack paint - my amg spoiler was done with it. Years ago I used some of that plastic film stuff on the back of my ute after repainting where the tonneau clips rubbed the paint off - can't remember what it was called but i think it just came from supercheap or somewhere like that.

KBS is an australian alternative to POR15 - same guy but restarted his company in Australia - cheaper and i believe may be better or at least some products have had further development. Dont quote me on that, just repeating what i think i have heard.

Thanks for that, Craig :-)

Although the car's an 83 build (Series I), it came to me with 8-hole 15-inchers which are rather scarred. I'm replacing them with some AMGs that just need a repaint.

Also interested to learn about the local "POR-15"; shall check it out.

Hi there

Not sure about the underside or the correct paint colour for the bundts but below is a link to a helpful site and the table which shows what cladding/trim colours go with what body colours. The combinations changed a couple of times between 81 and 82 but the table below should be right for your car

http://www.w126-wiki.de/index.php?title ... nd_Polster

This is the relevant table

1982 onwards

Cladding code colour For the following body paint codes
7175 Mattgrau-Metallic - 199, 312, 355, 735, 737, 751, 877, 900, 904, 929, 930, 932 930
7174 Anthrazitgrau-Metallic - 040, 172, 501, 540, 568, 587, 702, 803, 822, 876, 881 876
7414 Mattbraun-Metallic - 427, 444, 473, 480, 585, 623, 673, 681, 684 476

Thanks for the link, Carl.

I have the hard-copy book with all the info in it, but as I'm between addresses, it's packed away deep inside a huge shed that's so full I can't get in to find things!
