Aftermarket exhaust for 1988 W126 420SEL

Post by 420.SELect » Sun 10 Dec, 2017 10:30 pm

Hi,

I have recently purchased a 1988 420SEL and am wondering what options are available for upgrading the exhaust.
Is there a standard products available or is it mostly custom jobs?

Cheers!

Why do you want to change the exhaust?
Power?
Economy?
Noise?

To be honest it would be a mix of noise and performance.
Achieving an increase in performance would be the end goal but it would be nice to get a bit more of a growl in conjunction.

I have seen some impressive custom work on here but didn’t find too many posts regarding other options available - this could just be that I am still pretty fresh to OZBENZ and not to competent with the searches just yet.

Any information/advice would be great.

My questions were just to let others know why you wanted to change the standard system. Others have greater knowledge of your model (I am a dieselhead) and I am sure will read your posts.
Welcome to the forum. It is attended by very experienced enthusuiasts, some of whom are mechanics, with long experience working on this marque.
I look forward to the conversations.

Certainly a number on here with custom systems. There has been talk on what systems much of which talks of difficulties in getting off the shelf parts like headers. Often however that is in the context of what seems to be the holy grail of tri Y's...AMG style. Be very interested to see what others have to say

Just be really careful, it is possible that an exhaust (even a quality aftermarket) can drone at cruising speeds. This will destroy your beutiful limousine comfort.
You really need to get a recommendation from someone who has had a particular exhaust fitted to a W126.

Even the high quality and high expense Fabspeed exhausts a lot of US "enthusiasts" get fitted, have been known to drone when cruising.

cheers

If you search on Kimrh posts, he has done the most recent and extensive research. I presume your car has the 'kidney' mufflers that wind their way out to the side and then come back before going over axle. I have a car modified by AMG back in the day and they did away with that kidney set up and had a small 2 into 2 resonator in its place and then a big free flowing Remus muffler 2 in 2 out in the rear. Remus was crazy expensive and perhaps not available but Kim has researched a much cheaper but equivalent magnaflow item. As is normally the case, you rarely gain a lot of power if nothing else is touched. Tri-ys do come up from time to time and will gain a bit from them. Depending on budget, if it mainly wanting to hear the V8 more, you could get away with replacing just mufflers, but make sure they are straight through, big with lots of deadening material and should work the best. Given Kims work would just follow that.

Chris i have been thru this excersise extensively on both the 560SEL and the white 500SEC to get the desired V8 rumble and avoid drone.
If you have not read this thread then do as i have listed the required centre muffler required & rear muffler in Stainless Steel from magnaflow.
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=23362
The ideal pipe size turned out to be twin 2.25" all the way underneath from the down-pipes back
I used 2.50" dual in-dual out muffler in the rear though the critical piece in the build was the Magnaflow rear muffler has an internal crossover that seems to work very well in helping create that nice deep rumble without any harsh raspy barking sound that some systems have which i did not want at all. The 2.25" pipes leading up to the rear muffler are just flared out to join the rear 2.50" in pipes.
I had Shaun add dumpers out the rear of the muffler that are basically hidden from view and point the exhaust fumes downwards which works a treat and no need for stainless tips to be welded on. Did the same on the coupe which just has the factory rear bumper fitted (same as your rear).

In the coupe which is louder i went for 14inch length rear case (muffler case size length excluding any pipes sticking out)
In the SEL i went for the longer length 18inch rear case to tone it down a bit which worked a treat.
The sound is so good a haven't used the radio or played any music in either car since!!! no need
I ordered the mufflers in from Summitt racing in USA myself but they can be sourced local in Aust (even listed on Ebay) or local muffler shop can order them in

All the custom work was done at my local exhaust shop - Carline Grapnel Mufflers located in Balcatta. Shaun the owner i have known for many years and his work is top notch mandrel bends and his pricing excellent. if you go to him to discuss/quote mention my name and he will look after you.

Some Youtube clips on the SEL - play these on your home PC with decent speakers & sub-woofer connected

Not sure if your 420SEL has the Euro logs that have down pipes each side of the engine / or the crossover pipe behind the engine heads that directs one side over to the other above the bellhousing with a single downpipe or two downpipes going underneath from one side?
Both mine have no CATS which also helps with the sound (if an original +25yr old Cat is fitted to your exhaust it will most likely be mostly blocked resulting in decreased performance.
if yours is a crossover then get Shaun to delete that and create a downpipe for each side off the cast headers

Cheers

Kim,

Thanks your post - you have put some serious hours into this; with an amazing result I might add. The sound is epic!!
Im not nearly as savvy with cars (Benzs' in particular) as you but pretty keen to put the time (and money) in to get my 420SEL rumbling like yours.

I have been through your post and started crunching the numbers; ending up with around $630 (AUD) delivered from Summit, with both Mufflers and exhaust tips.
Still thinking about what style of tips I want. I don't mind the tips sticking out a bit but definitely appreciate why you would want to tuck them in. Keep the classic looking classic.
Given that I am going to need lengths of 2.25 stainless tube, mandrel bends and installation. What would the final damage be roughly?
If you don't mind me asking that is.

Also, I have to do some inspecting to figure out whether I have the euro logs or not, I am away at the moment so can just go outside and have a look.
I will report back once back in Perth.

No need to buy any of the pipework as Shaun has it in his shop and his quote will be to custom build the system for you excluding the mufflers if you purchase them yourself. He might be able to source the mufflers cheaper than you can get them, but i never asked as i already had the mufflers when i went and saw him. He looks after me as i refer business to him and have known him for many years with various cars i have taken to him so my price will be different to walk in clients. But he is way cheaper with top work than you will get from big name custom exhaust shops who charge accordingly on their name. It will help if you mention my name when visiting him and mention i pointed you in his direction.
He stocks lots of chrome tips as well if you are after a pair that comes out under the bumper as per how AMG did it back in the day or shaped same as factory outlet pipes to exit over to the left side more via the S-bend arrangement.

Ahh I see, I had a feeling that may have been the case but thought I'd ask the question.

I will give him a call and see what he can do about the mufflers and get a quote while I am at it.
I will definitely let him know that you have referred me.

Thanks for your time and knowledge, Kim.

I'll provide an update once I have spoken to Shaun, and hopefully some videos in the not too distant future.
