TRI-Y FRONT PIPE QUERY NEED VIN

Post by 91MercCoupeMBL » Thu 15 Jun, 2017 7:26 pm

G'day All,

My 500SEC is currently in the shop being fitted with 560 Tri-Ys, Tri-Y down pipes and a new front exhaust pipe to replace that huge catalyst...

Yesterday, we found the down pipes diameter LARGER than the INLETS on the newly ordered front pipe fresh over from Germany.
The front pipe INLET diameter is too small for proper match up with the 560 down pipes. The OUTLETS are NOT at issue here.
There is just no way it will 'bolt up' as was expected. We are looking for an elegant 'Bolt up' 'factory' solution for this problem, if possible.

Some of you have factory performance 560 M117 engines with tri-Ys with NO Catalyst..

I need the VIN so as to reference the ECP regarding the pipe between down pipes & 'kidney bean' mufflers.... or ... What is the part number of the front pipe that fits your configuration please?

It is #164 in the attached parts diagram

I'd love to get some insiders' knowledge so we might have a good answer quickly..

German Car Day it the Larz Anderson Museum here in Boston on Sunday and I will be there with my SEC..

Thank you

MBL

sorry, i can't help with part numbers - maybe someone with access to EPC can help. I have a 500SEC with 560 HC engine fitted with tri-ys, but it appears to just connect as normal to the rest of the system - but i didn't fit it and maybe they modded something. My AMG with tri-ys has a different set up with a centre 2 in 2 out and no kidney mufflers. Not much help hey!

Best knowledge i know on here for that sort of detail might be Kimrh. 7.45pm here in Adelaide so a couple of hours earlier in WA where he is, so maybe PM him and he may be able to respond quickly.

And have you tried Benzworld? They might all be asleep!

This is your VIN - which has a catalyst centre. It also means your downpipes are different.
Based on the VIN below are the EPC parts compatible with your car as originally fitted.
Here you go.

G'day Craig,

Thanks for your infos earlier!

Because of my tastes, my 1991 German Market 500SEC has just stepped away from the MB generated/accepted norms.

Its a KAT car. No longer.

As of this afternoon, has been fitted with 560 tri-Ys & 560 Tri-Y downpipes.

You are correct....

We are running between the accepted lines here.

I wish MB had a solution for us.

Re: TRI-Ys & Euro front pipe mods

Updated: Job completed last Summer.. by modifying that front pipe.. replacing the front flanges with proper sized bits (larger) & widening the spread between the inlets.... Got that all sorted & nice when I practically tripped over a REMUS w126 rear section quite by accident! Back to the shop to take out the stock rear silencer and put that bad boy up in place...

For clarity the flow is thus: Tri-Ys >> Factory Downpipes >> Modded 2 In 2 Out 1264907419 Front Pipe >> Stock 'kidney bean" resonators >> REMUS 126 rear section...

What GREAT sound now... Its got a deep throaty idle, quiet at cruising speeds, but when pressed at speed & in the power band... WOO HOO its ALL business.. With the 2:24 rear axle ratio, the engine really comes into its own and pulls like hammers above 70-80 Mph... Rather pleasant really..

I am just itching to see what the car will do on the top end now.. legally sanctioned I mean.. Official Certificate other than a speeding ticket... lol.

Happy in Massachusetts,

Malcolm

Well done! Yes i love the Remus on my car and not a day when i don't think how great it sounds. I know others have worked out good systems and i haven't heard them in the flesh but i do know what you mean with the Remus.
