My Euro 87 500SEC revised look

Post by kimrh » Tue 03 Jan, 2017 8:41 pm

Following on from my complete front end suspension re-build (posted in another thread).
I then moved on to painting all the lower cladding and bumpers on the coupe in matching arctic white (something i had wanted to do for some time).
With the Eibach lowering springs and B8 shocks in the front and after spring pad were swapped for the 3rd time i finally settled on nib 3 pads

It was time to move onto the rear end.
last weekend i pulled the struts/factory springs and factory sway bar
In went the custom dkubus anti-dive 19mm sway bar and its new poly bushes to stiffen up the body roll
In went the rear Eibach lowering springs and 2nib spring cups
One rear strut dust boot had splits on the creases so that was replaced with a new boot.
The SLS fluid was all replaced with fresh MB15 fluid.

Then it was time to also revise the look of the coupe-
Out went the custom smoked front indicator lights and out went the custom rear red/clear tail-lights

In went the minty as new front Euro orange factory Bosch indicator lights
in went the minty as new Bosch rear tail-lights
In went my minty fresh as new rear beaver matching in-fill panel that sits behind the rear number plate (for that 80's Toyota Crown look - hehe!!)

So now the coupe has taken on a fresh new look which i actually like better and it is surprising how factory lights came up trumps in the end against the white body colour!!

I just need to wait for the rear springs to settle in for a week and then do some more adjusting to re-set the SLS
Pretty happy with the transformation so far

Next step is the custom S/Steel exhaust system of which i now have the S/steel Magnaflow mufflers to hand from USA ready for the 2.25 inch build and to get some serious V8 rumble happening.
Then onto fitting up the Dkubus custom KE-Jet fuel and ingition management sytem which is ready to install
Then finally swapping out the 2.24 diff for a 2.65LSD ready to drop in.
Cheers

That looks awesome Kim, don't know how you make the time to get all this done with your other projects. I'm a huge fan of the all arctic white look, I recon the oz rims will really pop against the white surrounding too. The indicators and lights look great and so does the reflector strip, especially against the white.
Amazing how the detail changes have such a big effect overall.

Its looking great Kim - the only thing better was when we had both our SEC's out for a run on Warwick Road yesterday afternoon.

I much prefer the factory spec rear lights and the orange front indicators give it a new fresh look.

Looks great Kim, I think you nailed the rake on the SEC. You have a garage that is the envy of many, let alone once a WB joins the fleet. You had a very productive xmas break - much more fun than fixing a Prado I imagine.
If the clear lights aren't going on the black car and need a new home, drop me a line please.

Hi Drew, I haven't decided what light combo is going on the black 560SEC WB project yet.
The smoked SEC corners i am not sure if you can still buy them? and same for the clear/red combo tail-lights as you mostly see those crystal/red combo ones on ebay which look really daggy.

Looks great Kim, the rear light panel (heckleblende?) looks great, the change of diff ratio and exhaust system will transform the car. I've noticed a real power difference with mine, after the first drive I thought it was up high in the 4500rpm range, but it's way earlier, you can see the nose lift and it comes on song at 3000rpm with no crossover and losing nothing power wise below that.

Well another session under the rear of the coupe last night after work.
Not happy with the Eibach's with nib2 spring cups i went through the tedious process of de-pressurising the SLS system, pulling rear interior seats / pulling the SLS struts and then spring compressor/plates on the springs to swap the spring cups with nib1 cups

Left the coupe overnight to settle the springs and being a nice morning and its Friday decided to drive the coupe to work (school holidays and freeway not congested) and cruised in at 100kmh all the way into the city - nice drive and the coupe felt good on the road - rock solid and the back is now sitting down about right (could be a touch lower but it may settle over the coming week)

Anyway took some snaps in the basement car park at work of the stance as it was this morning after the drive into the city

Moving along!!
I have been working at night as no holiday leave and the missus is away with work and left me a list of house things to do, but i have been tinkering in the garage tonight.

So i am in the middle of pulling the front seats to convert the leather trim and base molds over the the later post >88 gen2 interior trim which i had started to do ages ago and left the front seats until last with the rear swapped over some time ago (amazing how time goes so by so quick!!)

I have a complete later Gen2 interior in black as i always had a plan to go black on the white coupe but could never make a decision on leaving it grey or going black!!!

Anyway whilst i pull the front grey seats and take my time to re-build them thoroughly with adding a bit more bolster to the side panels and really getting them nice, as well as adding pool noodle underneath to add extra support to the sides, which will take me some time doing it at night bit at a time i thought i would have a bit of a play on combo colour theme and swap the black seats in so i can still drive the coupe during the grey seat upgrade/refurb period which will take me a couple of weeks.

Here is a pic taken tonight before i pull the drivers seat out and swap in the black seat.
A bit different with the two tone look as a temporary measure - thoughts

Hi Kim,
I think black is definately the go with the white body.
Are you going to change the carpet to black as well?

Hi Kim,

I agree with Bill. Black makes a nice contrast with the white exterior. Grey makes the car look washed out.
Just my 10 cents worth!

Thanks for some feedback and all own opinions welcomed.
Yes i do have a complete set for a black interior including the black carpet/door panels/trims etc.
I don't have a black roof lining but that is not a problem re-covering in need or leaving that grey?
Same goes for the rear parcel shelf and lids of which i have spare molds stripped down - i have new material on the roll on both black and grey to recover them.

I sifted through tons of saved pics of white coupes (also SE/SEL's) from across the globe and could only find one white coupe based in NZ ( a widebody) that has been converted to black interior because his rear parcel shelf is still grey. 98% are grey with a few in Palomino and a few in custom white.
2 x Pic of the WB coupe below and you can only get a glimpse of the black interior

Good choice! That 'stormtrooper' WB looks great.
Yeah, hot weather inside a car = stinky sweaty everything! It will be worth it though.

More progress
Rear cabin swap complete
Both front seats are now in and all the associated carpet and kick panels ( i worked the seats with extra padding on the sides under the leather so they really hug your butt more)
Last night i pulled the dash to do a swap to a darker dash and some also swap in some better wood
The door trims i will leave to last as that is an easy job to swap them over.

Found the twin vacuum pods on the main air vent control were tied down with plastic zip ties to lock the large vent flap in the closed position
Never knew they had been interfered with and in a previous life this would have been done as a short cut instead of replacing the vacuum pods as no doubt they are split and not holding vacuum.
My 420 coupe was interfered with in the exact same way with two plastic zip ties holding the fresh air vent closed due to bad twin vacuum pods that operate that main fresh air flap.

With the dash out it is a good time to tidy up wiring in there and check over everything including the spiderweb optic fibre lighting as it is now easy to access

Back from Bali Trip and despite the lousy heat i managed to get the interior sorted.

removed the shifter box and rebuilt it with best of parts out of two and installed a new shorter shaft length shifter which looks much better.
Pulled the temp wheel sensors and replaced the temp readout strips
Installed a fully loaded dual zone aircon panel with multi switches (rare genuine panel) and it looks pretty cool - used up all available multi prong optic fibre outlets.
Installed a matching burlwood rear seat slider storage box
Tested the vac pods and lines/joiners and all ok / tidied up the wiring behind the CD/radio player as it was a jungle mess - now all clip tied and coded.
Installing a replacement black dash on my own is not much fun - lots of swearing and plenty of sweating in this heat (it is really a 2 person task)

Anyway the whole replacement of the interior is very time consuming task which requires lots of patience otherwise it is easy to break something.

Some quick snaps at end of today's work in this appalling weather - hot and very humid!!!
Still have more finer detailing to do but it looks pretty sharp with the late gen2 black interior contrasting against the arctic white exterior - certainly taken the coupe up a notch in presentation

Very nice Kim, interior looks awesome.

My experience removing dash and reinstalling, wasn't to hard, but certainly easier when you have two people to remove the old dash and install the new one in place. Remember turning the key for the first time thinking I hope this all works! Only issue I had was spider globe blew, hence needed to remove the upper console and replace.

I tested all my pods when dash was out and found both behind the glove box were stuffed, so replaced those.

Kim is a machine - I was ready to goto sleep at 11pm then drove home after a mammoth trouble shooting session but he then continued on till 4AM reinstalling his interior after we solved the issues.

I have been falling asleep all day with reduced mental capacity, Kim probably didn't even sleep at all, had a few ice coffees and went straight to work.

I need to toughen up.

All dash lights are now functioning properly as they should.
New stainless steel door sills installed (these completely replace the factory plastic ones as are the same profile and size)
and updated complete instrument binnacle swapped in (different style to previous one)

Hi Thomas
I have finally learn't how to host pics from my flickr account which i have had for some years -versus uploading pics direct (as this website requires pics shrunk down somewhat)
So if anyone is ever wanting decent size pics for saving to their album collection just let me know which ones and i will upload a link like below examples

Kim
Which s/wheel did you settle on, as your pics. show two different ones ?...I think I like the black one better, but then I have 4 x s/wheels, incl. a timber Nardi, so opinions change regularly..

Last Sunday at the German Day Car Meet we were fortunate the club booked Perry Lakes reserve and we we allowed access onto decent grass and a nice reserve setting
Later in the arvo when most had departed we hung around as MercmadWA (acca David) was fascinated with that mint silver W140 private import from Japan and talked to the owner for ages.
I slipped over and used my iphone to take advantage of the perfect setting for getting some decent pics of my two W126's
They did actually came out ok - i will post up the SEL pics in its own thread and post up the coupe pics in this thread
I was quite surprised how well an iphone shoots even with no fancy tripod as the pros use with expensive digital camera's and the use of reflective boards etc - just me trying to stop the iphone from moving which us really hard to do versus holding an proper SLS camera.

I just had a custom exhaust built for my white coupe from the Tri-Ys back in 2.25inch S/Steel using a Magnaflow performance S/steel twin-in-twin out 11inch centre muffler and in the rear a Magnaflow performance S/Steel 14inch twin-in-twin out 2.5inch with internal crossover and discretely hidden twin dumpers.
This is a replication of the Wheelers & Dealers TV Discovery Channel segment on the Replica AMG Widebody build over in USA who gave the task of building a custom exhaust along the lines of the AMG exhaust system that was supplied for Magnaflow to replicate but using their own product. Which many of you may have watched by now.

Boy oh boy the sound is just insanely incredible and i am loving it - pure bliss.
I did not know how damn good you could get these M117 engines to sound with the correct set-up.
Just like on the TV show it is a deep visceral rumble at idle and when you take off it is better than a Gen3 and cruising it makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck.
It reminds me of the Aussie 5 litre V8 sound with a good system.
Magna flow put a bit of effort into getting it right as the TV show goes out Global and they sure got it right on this - good on them.

My exhaust guy could not believe the amount of weight shredded by dropping the factory system- as he states its bloody heavy like a boat anchor.
When i get a chance i will post it up on a youtube vid

After finally sorting out an external mic issue to the gopro and mounting a small Rodex mic clipped to the rear number plate i mucked around with these couple of video's to add to this progress thread of mine
Just a lazy cruise around the block abiding at all times to our road rules/speed limits so not the best video versus away from public roads.
Day time-

Night time
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjSY2xCMsDk
Try and watch these clips with a decent sound system hooked up to your home PC and not your iphone.
Note the sound is not like this in the cabin area as it is more low rumble without all the extra noise where the mic is located.
Next go i will try the mic in different locations to give a better idea of sound from within the cabin area.

We should at some stage go bush again and record you flying past the camera at full throttle, that's always amusing.
