Flame suit on .....

There is still plenty of them at self service wreckers to allow me to rat the bits to update my W123s. Primary items are

Front Brakes + Booster
Leather steering wheel
Becker 1432 / 780
Front seats
Rear reading lights
Outside Temp Gauge and sender
and 1 day, nice euro spec M117 ....

Seriously tho, saw a run down 380SEC at Allan Lennox the other day, even neglected, they look good. Was hoping this one was going to get the treatment.

One of the things that appeals to me about the W126 is the great ads that appeared over the years and some of the great photos that have been put up on the Web by Fellow W126 Nutters. For eg....from US Benzworld site...

Thanks for that Kim - had a bit of a look. I can appreciate all of them but realise i have the sedan i like the best. Often i like early 'purest' form of the designer, before the stylers try and 'improve' it. And i can appreciate the 'high riding' gen 1 but really like the long wheelbase gen 2, sitting down, bigger wheels etc, love the dark colours and as much as i love my SEC with body kit, like the SEL just as it left the factory. Each to their own of course, just glad got the right one for me..... like it so much I have a pair of matching dark blue 560SEL..... need to sell one but I don't think I can be truly happy unless i have at least one!

Absolutely - bloddy W108.... my hair line is receding and my biggest fear of going bald is all the scarring on my head will make me look like i am some sort of street fighter! Boot lids too - the guy who had the final say on design must have been particularly short.... or has a sick sense of humour.

OK, speaking of appeal, what do you Fellow W126 Nutters think of the attached photo?

It's the first time I have seen a W126 with colour matched hubcaps. They were common on previous models such as the W116, 108, 123 etc.

Any thoughts? :dontknow:
Cheers,
Kim

I am sure you could push the earlier painted caps into the standard gen 1 14" rims, but I always thought they had plastic ones with the steel rims. But you never know - they were still producing 107 at the same time and not seen those with plastic - I think a lot of the time you hear people say 'that's not correct, but i reckon if you ordered a new car and said i don't want that plastic rubbish that they would have been happy to fit those. As to the look - not right to my eye but you never know could grow on me.

This guy in Charleston, South Carolina is rapt in his recently acquired W126 300SE.

Don't you love it when they get their first W126 and as they do a tour around the car they discover the little delights of a W126.....such as: "Oh look, this car has little lights in the door...how cool is that!"

Near the end of the vid, he sniffs the air and says that he thinks one of his neighbours is smoking weed! A nice touch!

Erwin is now home on WA and his makeover is underway.
He is booked in mid May for some paint and paint work as the roof and bonnet are faded. For now this is his best side.

good to have Ozbenz back!

You might not be expecting this one but I love the fuel economy! I'm getting to know my 300TE but around town I am trying really hard to get is fuel economy down to less than double of the Peugeot wagon it is replacing..... telling the wife that it will use a bit more but.... all the other advantages. The Pug though did 'soil' its reputation with her though when a sensor related problem forced her to take an expensive taxi ride home, then having to come back with me to get it with car trailer and car started and operated fine.

It will do better on the open road ( I got 11 from about a 50/50 split of country and city) but around town being super careful and I can't get it under 13 and 13.5 per 100k is more common. I'm still looking for any issues but it sounds like that's about right around town and we live in the hills with lots of up and downs. I deliberately didn't look at fuel economy too closely on the 560 when using it as a daily but it didn't seem to use heaps more than that. Then last night I got a car club magazine with results of our 'economy run', that i 'tongue in cheek' took the AMG modded SEC to with family all on board. I was nice and gentle on the throttle, but no more so than the 300TE - result.... 13.8l per 100k! The run was entirely in the Adelaide hills with lots of ups and downs.

I remember the daily drive in the 560 and particularly the steep road up to our house and the 560 only needed the lightest of throttle to glide its way along, only different when say a young boyracer stuck on your tail and the immature me would plant the foot and it would take off like it was in a police chase, The 300 needs considerably more throttle and gear changing to do the same job. So for such a large luxurious car I love the fuel economy.... but i can't put the kids bikes in the back or the dog (without it licking my ear) etc so yes the practicality of the TE is in a different league. Maybe the TE needs a 560 engine?

The styling ,and then there is the engineering. The 420 goes onto Historic plates next year (1990 make, reg in March 1991. One of the last imported ) and becomes even cheaper to run.

So many things Kim! The heft, the iconic silhouette, the fact that just about every 1980s and 1990s action film featured them etc...

I try to find the mint ones and enjoy them for 6-12 months improving upon them and then moving them on to a new home. Love the W140s too, but they are twice as hard to maintain.

You can see some of the nice ones I've come across in the past on my youtube channel; https://youtu.be/4Ef7LvaCqe0

I have always had project cars in my life right back to my young days with highly modified custom Holden EH
The W126 is an iconic car and the chassis production run lasted +10yrs which is testament to its global appeal
Even in toady's modern world of hi-tech cars they have such classic appeal across the globe in any country but more importantly they really are an easy DIY car to work on in every respect
I like them modified and AMG pre-merger did a really good job of that considering this was all happening +30 years ago and their creativity was simply amazing for that era

I've been threatening for years to get a W126 to keep my W123 company. I've finally bitten the bullet, picking up a 1990 420SEL. John Green asked me if I enjoyed 'wafting' about in it. I can't think of a more appropriate verb to apply :happy7: .

Just lovely! Nice model too - I have one but been thumped in the rear... but rear door on the most crushed side still opens and closes like a new car and it drives perfectly. Good power and everything, really nice car.
