Is that the champagne colour on your 380SEL? Looks good.
Nice wheels.

Hey Kim

Yes it is. It's a good colour for the car I reckon. Thanks, they are Centro wheels from Germany. Came with the car. Lucky to have them I think! :)

Champagne is quite a nice colour (though it appears darker in your photos - probably the light). A lot of people call it gold, but it's paler than gold.

Back in the 70s MB had a colour called icon gold, which is a darker richer gold colour. I have never been a fan of icon gold (sorry to those Icon Gold car owners on the Forum).

When we bought our champagne W126 300SE, the colour seemed quite bright, but after a couple of weeks driving the colour seemed to tone down, at least psychologically.

The same happened with our signal red W126 380SEC coupe. It was SO BRIGHT, I almost felt embarrassed to drive it. But, again after a few weeks, I couldn't care less.

I wonder if other Ozbenz members had the same sort of reaction when first driving their bright coloured cars. Maybe it's just me...I'm just a shy, retiring little wall flower type! :laughing6:

It has taken a while to get some good pics at home to put up (and they are certainly not as good as the ones of the car still on MB Spares' website), but here are some shots of my new (to me) 420SEL.

Built in Nov 1988, this is (was) a one-owner Melbourne car with now about 172,000km. Serviced all its life to date at the dealer and in very nice condition. I looked at a number of other cheaper options, all of which needed their purchase price or more spent on them in repairs to bring them to back to a condition where they should only need regular servicing going forwards, so hopefully I have done the right thing in paying near the top of the market to get a good one. Before picking it up, it had a number of bits and pieces replaced - electro-hydraulic actuator, engine and trans mounts, fuel pressure regulator, exhaust mounts, trans cooler hoses and handbrake shoes. There are some more things that will need attention eventually (leaky power steering pump, worn control arms and sway-bar bushes, rear subframe mounts), but nothing major that needs immediate attention.

I drove the car home from Sydney to Adelaide in June - about 1,500km over 2 days - with no serious problems. It averaged just over 11.9L/100km for the trip (23.7mpg). These cars are certainly at their best on a smooth highway, but I am pleasantly surprised at how good it is around the city as well, and the not the nightmare to park I had imagined it might be. The fuel consumption around town though is not quite so impressive (averaging around 18L/100km/16mpg).

Thanks Kim. The colour was one of the things that sold me on this car - and love the light coloured leather.

The creme/beige interior of the luscious Burgundy 420SEL that Chris posted up last year above continues into my purchase and venture late last year into the SEL chassis with my 1989 Euro 560SEL that was purchased from another member Tim over here in Perth.
Story in this link- viewtopic.php?f=10&t=22185
Really enjoying the old world charm of the longbody SEL's - passengers ride in pure comfort with tons of leg room and electric adjustable rear seat and comfy foot rests.
Here are some recent pics to add to the W126 photo album

G'day, fellow Benzheads! Yup, I'm still around, though somewhat "retired".

Over the last couple of years I offloaded most of my oversized collection of Benzes and shed full of spare parts, and am now left with just these two beauties (the newer one being my daily chariot). Life's tough (not!).

Cheers.

Thanks, Craig :-)

I've had the W112 for 12 years now (it was my 3rd MB), and its value has appreciated considerably beyond what I paid. Has 145K miles on the clock.

The C126 I acquired about 22 months ago (it's my 16th MB). It was formerly Ray Bunting's (Mercmad's father's) car. Had a mere 105K miles on the clock (was a private import).

You still on the Goldie? I'm a few km closer than I was – now living in Federal, working in Mullumbimby. (Decided not to retire when pension age arrived – needed something to keep the brain active! Working part time – a good balance: two days' work followed by a five-day weekend.)

Yup, life got in the way for a few years, but everything's back in order now. Mind you, with far fewer Benzes than I used to own and with other things on my plate, I'll probably not appear here as often as previously. I'm doing my best, in my dotage, to wear out rather than rust out. LOL

Down the park today so took a couple of quick snaps
Still need to swap in the AMG side-skirts soon and fit the Nak sound system
Its driving superbly now and ever so smooth, but very quick off the line and when passing as soon as you put your foot down (i am surprised just how quick it moves for a big car)

Looking good Kim. It makes me remember giving work colleagues etc a lift in the 560 at times, them admiring how luxurious etc it was for a car of its age and then saying and it goes too - plant the foot and hold it to redline etc - and that's just oz delivered hp - always a surprised response.

Cheers Craig and yes i think the full top end re-build with "Headtorqe" over here working the heads has helped a lot.
Perhaps with no weighty coil springs in the car it has freed up some excess weight?

After many months of work my 1985 280SE was parked at up MotorClassica on Friday. I do love the colour combination of thistle green and tan interior. Will be cherished by our family for many years to come.

I've named it Max after the original owner. Max wanted a specific colour combination with a sunroof and this combination was only found at S.F. Motors in Ballarat (an authorised Mercedes Benz dealer). Max owned the car for 31 years before offering it for sale April 2016 at the Mercedes Benz Concours d'Elegance. The car is original, including the paint work, the only change I have made is fitting period correct Mercedes Benz Bundt alloy wheels to replace the steel wheels and plastic wheel caps which the car was delivered with.

I won't bore you with what I've done to the car as there is a comprehensive thread viewtopic.php?f=10&t=22493

Awesome Pic -well done. Steve Nagy also had his 500 coupe on display in the MB stand outside - did anyone happen to get a pic of his as well as he also put a ton of work into polishing it up.

Im quite sure that was originally owned by Tony Barlow (Mens wear mogul for the 80's). If so, it was the first Benz I drove when I was about 17 or 18.

Thats what the previous owner told me as well. Do you remember if it had a front spoiler back then ?

Hopefully Dean will remember but just wanted to say that they are notorious for getting ripped off on speed bumps etc. Mine was missing on my AMG when i picked it up but could see where mounted - asked the guy and he said "i chucked it, it was broken", never even crossed his mind to repair it. And did it have the SEC front from day 1?

As far as I know it did, but I don't know if it came from the factory like that or it was put on by AMG, but either way it is still factory.

WOW! Im having some serious flashbacks!!!

I don't recall the front lip spoiler but it did come from AMG with the SEC front.

I worked for Tony for several years in the late 80's early 90's and on many occasions he would ring up and want the Benz delivered to him. I was always happy to oblige.

He kept it in the family for many years, I think his son Dereck had it for around 5 or 10 years.

Great car - i'm really happy to see it survived.

Next time your up in Perth, let me know - i'd love to have a check it out!

I find that local history really interesting. I can see why a man of style would make a personal decision not to break up that smoothness at the front with the spoiler and emphasize that more angular SEC front that he no doubt paid a lot to have on there. The two Australian ordered AMG I know of also went to successful local businessmen. What a shame AMG don't share records, would love to know how many crazily priced AMG cars were ordered and came straight back to Australia. With time to burn could look on trove in the 1980's and see if it came up in media, but probably not. And there is the local build AMG stuff, that tends to get talked down "just a benz with a few AMG bits bolted on" but to me that's part of history and still wasn't cheap to be able to drive in something that had that very uncharacteristic of Benz radical new look. It doesn't really matter i guess if the look is the look, but it is hard to tell the tribute from the original, but that's great to have that first hand account from Dean. How well do you know the family Dean? I don't suppose they still have AMG paperwork like that stuff i have hoarded away somewhere?

I just spoke to my brother who also worked for Barlow back when he had the 500AMG who said it did have the front AMG spoiler. It was painted white.

It was also fitted with a set of white centre Rial 433 mesh rims when it was originally delivered.

Those number codes can get reused but in the reference stuff on here you can get back to what the code meant at the time of your cars production - obviously you don't have bi-xenon headlights!

Most interesting is the order coming from India. My AMG and 'the red one' both have orders from India. Then i have a comprehensive trail of communication between AMG and the SA owner with them picking the car up from the factory and then eventually them travelling to AMG direct and driving the cars back to a premises he had in France - and then shipping to Australia.

Like i said, would be fascinating if you or someone could talk to the family. Obviously, like mine, if the family held on to it for a long time they will remember it and the story behind it. Thanks for sharing!

Is this the same SEL that the young guy at MB Star Motors was selling (Stephen if a recall - nephew of Adrian the owner of the shop and Stephen works there as their car detailer)
Hi-comp 560 motor installed, rebuilt transmission, new brakes all around, new tyres, tint with the work done at the shop
I saw that car in person but it was white and yours looks an off-white creamy colour in that pic??
If its the same car it was a bargain price for the work that has been thrown at it in the last year - the one i saw just needed the paintwork sorted out.

Yes, that's the car, it still needs a paint job and the interior needs redoing too.

Hello all! I am a proud owner of a 1985 500 SEC, one of the last Gen. 1 cars. This car started its life in Germany when it was picked up by its first owner from factory at Stuttgart at 22nd of May 1985. When the car was about an week old it got the original wheels swapped to BBS typ 184's. At some point the original springs have also been changed to AMG(?) springs, lowering the car some 5 cm. In Germany the car had two owers. The last ten years of its life the SEC spent in Estonia in hands of a one owner, where I purchased to Finland in September. Currently 256k kilometers (160k miles)

Here's the options list.

240 OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE INDICATOR
241 LEFT FRONT SEAT ELECTRICALLY ADJUSTABLE WITH MEMORY FEATURE
256 REAR AXLE WITH LIMITED-SLIP DIFFERENTIAL
260 ELIMINATION OF MODEL DESIGNATION ON REAR LID
280 STEERING WHEEL AND GEARSHIFT LEVER IN LEATHER TRIM
440 TEMPOMAT (CRUISE CONTROL)
442 AIRBAG IN STEERING WHEEL
452 TWO-TONE HORN
480 SELF-LEVELLING SUSPENSION
506 OUTSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR, LEFT AND RIGHT, HEATED (ELECTRICALLY ADJUSTABLE ON THE RIGHT)
510 BECKER RADIO MEXICO CASSETTE FULL STEREO, ELECTRONIC, KURIER LM/MW/SW/USW
543 SUN VISOR WITH VANITY MIRROR, ILLUMINATED, LEFT AND RIGHT
581 AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL
645 M+S TIRES
673 HIGH-CAPACITY BATTERY

I have driven the car for only 1,5 months after letting it sit over the winter. Within a month I will do some servicing to it and take it as a daily driver for the summer. There are some minor issues to deal with, such as jerking shift from D to R and slight chassis/drivetrain vibration at highway speeds. Also the cruise control is working intermittently, such as heating, which does not heat time to time. The steering box has also developed a leak. Anyway, it is overall a clean and original car with practically no rust.

Some pictures as it was when purchased (click for bigger!) In the first picture is also my winter drive, 300 E-24. I have recently been looking around OZBENZ together with 500eboard, since my native forums are not so model specific to for example C126, and looks like there is some good discussion about these cars on both forums.

It is a very nice example Gen1 SEC Heksi especially suited to those rims and cool colour - Nice buy and enjoy
I am sure you will fix those minor issues easily given your Merc ownership history
Notice you have jumped onto a few Merc forums of late - hehe

Thanks, I love the wheels also. It wouldn't hurt if they were 16", but I happy as it is now. Well chosen aftermarket wheels in -85!

I joined here about a year ago, and have been looking around for W124 stuff, and decided to share something about my car(s). I think it's a big part of this hobby anyway!

The SEC's look nice in the Almadine Burgandy colour.
I was out on the white coupe for a small cruise last Sunday and pulled up in my sons street where they have bought a home.
Parked up in the shade next to the small park in his street and took a couple of snaps on the iphone
