Recent trip to Port Fairy in my 420SE

Post by ngruzevs » Thu 18 Jan, 2018 10:22 am

Just came back from a two week break to Port Fairy, this time used my 420SE. The V8 W126 really comes into its own on the highway, from a performance and economy view. Averaged 10.7 L/100 over 1000K's, which I consider excellent for a W126, certainly more efficient on the highway compared to its six cylinder siblings. Also. There's also enough space for my growing kids (11 & 14), while the 505 litres of boot storage is sufficient.

The cream on the cake is the comments I received about the car. Only saw one other W126 while away, an 84 380SE (second photo) still on original reg and had original steel wheels and caps (owner was more than happy to have a chat).

Too bad we don't have European standard roads or speeds in Australia.
When you get up to over 130kmh cruising in these cars they really excel.

Agree, although occasionally overtook cars on single lane highway, dropping down from top to 2nd doing 130-140K's, sounded great.

I've taken my 300SE (non-cat) on same route, but guess due to a final drive ratio of 3.46 struggled to get better than mid 12's.

Glad to hear that you had good trip!

Re comments....funny thing is that the same thing happens when we're out and about in either the W126 300SE or the W126 380SEC. Our 300SE is the same champagne colour as the 380SE you encountered.

Without trying to sound too self-indulgent, I think the W126s stand out these days when compared to all the "fridge mobiles" and the ever present SUVs that permeate our roads today, hence the nice remarks by passersby.

So, keep waving the flag, there could be some potential W126 Nutters out there who haven't "come out of the closet" yet!

Cheers
Kim

Hi,
as you haven't posted anymore here, I wondered if you have Internet in prison. I wish you all the best there and hope for you, that you get an early release :laughing5: :laughing5:

Lol Thomas, You’re correct, we are called the police state for good reason. Assume you’ve already been arrested while visiting, but they must have given you early release?

I haven't been arrested, but I paid in Oz twice ... so if you could please thank me for adding to Oz state income :notworthy:

Apparently gambling revenue wasn’t sufficient, so government had to rely on locking up visitors for going over 100kph
