Not necessarily; from autumn 1992 to june 1993 it was called 220E or 220TE ... smart ass mode off :laughing6:
I actually test-drove a "220TE" in February 1993 and got my first new Merc delivered in July ... an E220 (the T was lost then) ...

Welcome here!

And that’s why I have been having trouble finding that model no it’s diffently a 220e. Is there much difference between the e220 and the 220e?

There was a big facelift in June/July 1993: easily to recognise, as the front lights don't go straight to the chrome grill. In September 1992, the 220E replaced the 230E, power increased from 132 to 150hp.
Here's my July 93 E220T:

No, that would be a 220E - if it has the m102 engine. it has the protruding chrome grille surround.

The M111 was introduced in the 220E in 1992, so that's correct. The only incorrect thing in your photo are the blinkers; they were originally yellow ... so some tuning has been done :laughing6:

Hi Thomas,

When the ‘93 update was introduced there was a big marketing campaign from MB Australia.
The motoring press gave the new “E220” glowing reviews with the much improved acceleration times and fuel economy plus extra bits and pieces.
I can’t remember now but the 220E was substantially different to the E220.
Do you know if the post ‘93 models’ came in with first gear start on the 722.4 or if there alterations to the ignition/injection setup?

The Australian new series ‘93 E220 came with a special marketing pack. - Cloth seats rather than leather or MBTex. They marketed at AU$80,000 - great price reduction compared to the earlier series.
MBA sold heaps of them.
Mate bought one for his wife. She came out of a W126 380SE into the W124 - she wasn’t impressed. Gave the E220 to her daughter and wanted the W126 back.
W211 - E240
W204 - C280

It's pretty easy: The 220E was the pre-facelift W124 with a new motor. In July 93 the facelift came AND the name change for all models, i. e. E220 or C200 or S500 ...

Actually Thomas, your point about the indicators is an interesting one.

Gretel is a may MY1992 build model coupe, and came with the 'clear' lenses.
The factory indicators, side markers and tailights are the slightly smoked clear version, which are the same as the gen3 cars.
But back to the clear lens thing for a moment- I'm guessing It's possibly an inventory overlap on the 1992/93 MY changes... I have noticed that most of the aftermarket ones are much lighter in colour than the mercedes ones, it makes the swap easier to identify.
There's also a bit of a price difference for the genuine lenses :laughing6: :laughing6: :laughing6:

Thanks for reminding me about m111 though - I completely forgot about the 9/1992 4 cyl engine changes. For some reason I never think about m111. Owning the 6cyl engine seems to make me only think to the 6 cyl change in 1990. better take my 'blinkers' off.

To be honest, I'm not good in M-numbers ... I just remembered the change from 230E to 220E (and subsequently I got this one), so I looked up the motor number.

For me, M117 is enough to know :laughing6: :laughing6:
