Auto Transmission 300E W124

Post by SQ-007 » Wed 15 Feb, 2017 4:08 pm

Hello All

I owned 300E W124 - March 1993.
The reverse gear of my car has almost died.
Called few transmission guys in Sydney and the quote was given from $2800 to $4500 (to rebuild or swap with already rebuilt)
Since I have not done this before, could any one please tell me a reliable transmission builder in Sydney.
or any other suggestion.

Kind regards

When I lived in Sydney, my ace Renault mechanic put me on to an automatic transmission specialist:

John McGraw Transmissions
72 Parramatta Rd
Ph: 02 9745 1055

I didn't end up needing his services but he test drove my car and I was impressed by his logic and troubleshooting technique. He seemed to cover alot of European marques. If no-one can recommend a Mercedes transmission specialist then try John.

Give the boys at MB spares (our forum sponsor) a call. 1300 787 300. They may have a good second hand unit. The last one I bought off them was $700.00. But they may not have any good ones now.

In Melbourne a rebuild can be done for between $1,700 and $2,800.00. The $2,800.00 rebuild requires that you leave the car with them for remove and reinstall (for warranty purposes)

Having said that. If the car changes smoothly in forward then it may only be a clutch problem or a valve problem. You need a reliable Mercedes specialist to check it out.

It depends on how you value the car and it's current condition and K's. A $4,800.00 repair would normally be more than the car is worth in many cases.

I have replaced transmissions in the same car twice - used units. It's pot luck getting a good one.
