Air conditioning not fitted

Post by martinsl » Wed 09 Nov, 2016 8:56 pm

I am importing a 1982 380SL from the UK to Perth WA and it was never fitted with A/C. Has anyone had an A/C system fitted to an SL without the horrendous cost of an original MB system.I have been warned off fitting an old system from a wrecked car as it will be over 30 years old and who knows what condition it might be in. I am looking for an after market kit that may be suitable. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience? Cheers Martin

I don't know first hand, but hotrod suppliers make small units i believe. But as for a used system, as long as it isn't climate control it is all pretty simple. New compressor and orings throughout system, drier etc - other parts can be tested for leaks etc - no more complicated than your fridge - that is the way i would be thinking. I think Drew56 fitted a hotrod unit to his finnie and could comment on that fitting and performance. And you could probably pick up a certain number of parts from a sedan, often imports from asia had non- climate control.

Just read an article from one of the members from the Jensen Club Australia, he retrofitted air conditioning to his MK1 Interceptor. He found a chap in Ballarat that specialises in installing air conditioning into hot rods, customer cars and farm machinery. A small Kubota compressor was used with a condenser from a Suzuki, using a built-in dryer. Owner is very happy with the installation, temperature measured at vents is 2 degrees. The installation wasn't cheap, all up it cost $5000.

I'd start with sourcing a heaterbox with a/c.
My car apparently has an after market a/c, but the mechanic was very relieved that the inside cabin stuff was genuine.

One more thought - 380sl has responded with values well above other models (except 560/500) being that last form, alloy engine etc. So if your thought was that you might someday sell it, depending on how many are on the market at the time then a hotrod a/c could make a difference - might get more than the amount it costs now in extra value. And that might seem like an outrageous comment given present values, but look what happened to the prices of Pagodas. But just thinking out loud
