Hello,

New Melbourne based member here, recently entered the classic Mercedes-Benz market and purchased an entry level W108 280s, in quintessential 70's Maple Yellow.

It's a 72' floor shift auto, which interests me as most common ones I came across when searching were all column shifts. Are the floor shifts generally more sought after?

It was registered and running since new essentially. Its well looked after and infrequently driven, ready to get in and enjoy. I'm wanting to switch to matching hubcaps, so the bundt wheels and it's sheep skin seat covers will be available for sale if anyone is interested?

Happy to hear on recommendations on parts sourcing or reputable repairers in the SE metro region.

Thanks,
Paul

Welcome. '72 is very late for a W108. Will no doubt have the same vented discs that the V8's had and this was standardised with the brakes at the end of production. Certainly less floor shifts around and i think they are desirable - so unless i am an oddity I reckon that makes them sought after and it made a difference when i bought my second 108 that had floor shift and sunroof. I think the bundts were probably more common on the later cars, and looking back I think they were considered desirable and a feature for people selling cars, but i like the look of the hubcaps too. When looking for replacement steel wheels, they would have been 14 x 6 but 6.5 which the V8's had would bolt straight on. Hubcaps all the same. The late wheels i am pretty sure would have round holes and fins at the back to help with brake cooling. They are the same as W107 and also W116, which will help the search - 6's on the 6cyl and 6.5 on 8cyl generally. I'm pretty sure that's correct but to check, you look between the bolt holes, the wheel has a date stamp with the month and year eg. 3 - 72. Also a part number starting with 108. But any 108 part number wheel (fins or no fins, holes or slots) will bolt on and be covered by the hubcap.

Welcome - great car - lots of interest in them and advice on here.

Also Irredellt - lots of advice on here about what to look for in that 560 - biggest tip is to open the boot and reach up to basically the underside of the rear window - very common to rust her and big job to repair - not terminal but you want to factor in a fair bit for repairing that. Other things are more obvious.

Yes, I have done my homework and read a number of the guides on here - what a wealth of information, really great stuff - I was wondering if anyone knew the car (Pajett red) in particular or if it was advertised one here (I don't think I have access to the for sale section). I guess a PPI from a merc specialist will catch all this in any event and I have asked the relevant question (I am in a different state unfortunately).

Cheers!

I see you have 4 posts - one more and their should be no more restrictions (just there to filter out scammers) - eg. for sale. Check out Ozbenz facebook too, maybe the SEC Australian one..... can't remember where but I have seen a couple of red 560 for sale for reasonable money - although long enough ago that if good you would think it would have sold. There was one in Queensland I think, that sounded good but with some things to be done, from memory guy was old and ill and sold cheaply...... and i think a guy Ray Rayman Axisa bought it (while everyone else was busy bagging it etc) - I don't know Ray but if you look at his posts I think he has a business fixing them. If it that's all correct - and by giving his full facebook name you can search that on Ozbenz facebook - then the timing is probably about right for the car to be fixed and turned over..... Where is it advertised?

New Member

Hi all recently purchased my first Mercedes Classic which is a 1971 300SEL.....the car was in very good condition for its age it has no rust at all but couple areas had minor paint issues etc air bags are in good condition likewise the interior is in very good shape...I've always looked at these cars for a while till a mate of mine purchased a 280SE V8 and since then I was on the hunt...which now is part of history..I'm planning in doing cosmetic work to her as in respray the sides etc to remove the paint imperfections and get her back to orginal as much as possible...looking forward to chatting with all here...Thanks

Love the original leather! Its usually stuffed or brand new..... this is definitely the best in my book and would take more than what I have left to live to recreate! Keep feeding it and keep it soft.

Hi Craig
Yes the the leather is going to be maintained and I'm fortunate it doesn't have many cuts in it...also painting the steering wheel black(see attachment) and installing an orginal beckker cassette radio...car is currently getting sprayed to both sides and blending into the bonnet and boot...paint work good but wanted it to be spot on...

Just a question did the 300sel come with fog lights as an option? as im thinking about it...also speakers for these came in the dash and I understand in the rear panel as one or 2 speakers? mine only had the dash....

Looking at doing the fader switch with speakers in the rear....I'll send photos once she is all done ad dusted...

Once again thanks for the add

I assume you have the 'california' dual lights but could have tombstone - tombstone have built in fog lights at the bottom and work via pulling the headlight switch towards you. So I believe US for fog where seperate units - there are 'correct' ones - can't remember but Bosch I think - and might be common to Porsche - try searching on ebay. They are mounted to the bottom curved area of that panel between light and grille. If it were me and particularly on 'special' car like yours, I would try and hunt down correct lights and find out exactly where factory put that hole. I had one car and drilled through the bumper! I expect you can wire in your headlight switch to them.

And yes speakers I have seen dash, +/- middle rear, two rear and have a car with 3 rear! All were small oval and had grilles on them like the dash one. Have also have seen them mounted in the kick panel area with same small oval, but if you have factory air, you have a blower down there. If you want to be pedantic about keeping it looking original, you can get high quality replacements that fit that oval in dash etc. I just dont have a reference where i saw that - but google and sure you will find it. Only going to get high quality for the 70's performance out of a becker (unless you do expensive modern internal upgrades from say sound lab in Sydney) but then the one in my Pagoda i think is just part of the period charm.... and its not a daily.
