1998 W210 E320

Post by sealion »

I have just lost part of my instrument cluster screen display. It's the only part that has a digital screen that shows the outside temp, trip meter, Km total distance, & the clock... My mech took the cluster out & told me that the part has partly failed & has to be sent out for a repair or replacement, all the 1.5 watt Bulbs are working perfectly, just the small screen down the bottom doesn't show the trip Km, total milage is very faint, as is the clock too, outside temp is showing ok... I have contacted 2 instrument repairers, one told me they can't get the parts & another said they are waiting to see if a part coming from Ebay will fix the problem on another cluster they have in the shop... Any info from this forum would be gratefully received...

Another question on this matter, if my mechanic swapped out the cluster for another he has on a wreck would it affect the coding of the vehicles other accessories... The unit he has is from a 1998 W210 E220 S/wagon...

Thanks

Hi,
had the same with my ex-1999-E320 ...it's common. Obviously you have to take the cluster apart, as there is some glue of those LCD displays that has to be removed. Here's a video I found ... maybe that helps: https://www.motor-talk.de/videos/merced ... 80650.html

Kind regards
Thomas

Thanks for your reply Thomas, and I'm sorry I took so long to get back to you... We ended up installing the donor instrument cluster from the W210 E220 station wagon, slight variation in odometer reading (20K higher) so we photographed the old & new clusters for any provenance for future owners as the readings remained the same on installation....

The main problem now is, the T-Model cluster keeps alarming on start up & shut down showing a "Low Hydraulic oil tank low" which my sedan does not have as this item was only fitted to station wagons (T-models) for the leveling of the rear suspension to account for heavier load carrying .. My mechanic tried cancelling it , but to no avail, so now I'm looking for a way to stop this alarm notification showing, it is mainly just annoying but I would like to dispense with it as it is not necessary, so if you, or anyone has a remedy to get rid of this notification on the instrument cluster I would be much obliged...

John...

Hi John,
I don't think that's easily possible. Afaik all those messages are sent via the CAN-Bus; so to simulate that is a challenge

I'd do the following: if it was only the display part in the middle, I'd transfer this part from the S210-cluster to the sedan-cluster ... if they're both pre-facelift, it should work. Otherwise put a sticker over the symbol

I guess this should be plug and play ...
Regards
Thomas
