Hi there,
I have just bought a really lovely 1995 E220 and this is first car I've owned with coil packs and synthetic oil.
All my cars up to this one I have always used the NGK non-resistor spark plugs BP6ES (M110/116/117) or BP6EFS (M102/103) and mineral oil 20W50.
With this new M111 engine, what type of spark plugs should it use? Are they still non-resistor or are normal resistor plugs needed in these?
And for the oil I assume I should use a full synthetic 10W40? I was thinking of using Castrol Magnatec but I'm not sure if it comes in synthetic 10W40.
I don't want to start a big debate on oil though, so just a confirmation that these engines were designed to use full synthetic from new will do. They had a 15,000km oil change interval in the service book so that must have been synthetic oil. (I will be changing the oil every 5000km regardless like I always have with all my cars).
The car has now done 245,000km with full service history of changes every 15,000km at the dealer until 2002 and then every 5000km at independents after that.

Re: M111 spark plugs and oil?
Hi Paolo,
as I have bought my first new Mercedes in 1993, an E220, I still have the original invoices. In this screenshot you see the oil, that Mercedes put in (5W-40) and the spark plugs (Zuendkerze). Maybe that helps.
Regards
Thomas

Re: M111 spark plugs and oil?
NGK partfinder says BCP6ES for plugs - so still non resistor - I suspect a slightly smaller spark plug socket diameter to fit the DOHC engine.
Penrite lube guide says 15W-60 HPR15 full synthetic, meets MB spec MB 229.1 - would definitely go for full synthetic but probably good to go for slightly higher than 10w-40 given the 200k+ mileage.
Congrats on the purchase!

Re: M111 spark plugs and oil?
Hi David thanks for the info.
The E220 has an up shift delay that seems to kick in every time it’s started to delay the first gear shifts until 3k I assume to heat up the cat faster.
I don’t like this so I’m thinking to use a lower cold weight oil because of this. I guess the hot weight could still be thicker. I don’t know if the engine burns any oil yet.
None of my other cars need any oil added between 5k changes so hopefully this will be the same.
