S123 Service Estate

Post by W123 300D »

Just a heads up if you are interested in the S123, Matchbox has recently put out a version of the S123 Service Estate.

I think it looks pretty good!

That takes me back :happy7:
When I bought my first S123, in Tokyo, there was a specialist S123 shop that I used to take it to.
When I first met the owner, he was driving this Service car.
It must have been over 20 years ago now and he was already getting on then... maybe his daughter has taken over?

p.s. Alex, a forum member, is in Tokyo about now and is going to try to visit so we will find out soon I guess.

Can someone explain the "S" used instead of "W" in the model designation S123 cf. W123?

Is the W123 coupé a C123?

Is this just a slang term like the "FX" 48-215 Holden... or is it a genuine factory designation?

I no longer have a W123 00TD but am always looking...so an outstanding example.
But enjoying my W123 300D
1980 w123 300D Silver sedan
1980 w123 300TD "Anna" - sold
1979 300D - sold, gone to be restored

2006 Musso - Korean Mercedes, 5 cylinder diesel - Blown head gasket, buggered motor, grrrrrrr (I will stick with German Mercs)

Yes, I have an S212, which is the Stationwagon version of the W212
There is also a C212

I am always amazed at the incomprehensibility of the Holden and Ford models type coding.

FX then FJ then this:

from Wikipedia:

Nomenclatures
Per Mercedes-Benz tradition (prior to the 1994 change), model designation corresponded to the engine displacement, chassis type (coupé or estate/station wagon), fuel type (for diesel engines only), and availability of fuel injection system (for petrol engines only):

C for Coupé
T for Tourismus und Transport (estate/station wagon)
No designation was given for the long-wheelbase: it was simply called "Lang" (long) in the brochures and order forms.

D for Diesel
E for Einspritzung (fuel injection)
When the diesel engine is turbocharged, TURBODIESEL is affixed to the right side of the boot lid.

As for the chassis codes, W123 is the saloon/sedan, S123 the estate/station wagon, C123 the coupé, V123 the long-wheelbase saloon/sedan a.k.a. Lang, and F123 refers to the bare long-wheelbase chassis as used for ambulances and other conversions.
