I’m back! New 300TD, need A/C advice

Post by julian »

Ola friends.
After a few years away I’m back in a w123. I’ve bought a very nice 300TD. Australian delivered. Excellent body work. Interior needs some tidying up. Sweet mechanicals.

Just had a very hot trip from Sydney to Adelaide. Reason?
Factory AC is dead. Old GM compressor. Had a mechanic look at it and confirms knackered compressor.

How have locals in Australia managed this, by way of changing to Sanden compressors etc.

Thanks everyone.

I feel your pain!
When I bit the bullet and decided my A/C compressor had to be replaced, my car service place replaced the compressor with a Delco unit.
Along with it were new receiver/dryer and pressure switch, replacement A/C hose (it was porous) and Schrader valves, belt and the oil and R134A gas. Had the "TX" valve in the evaporator replaced some time earlier to accept the 134A gas.

Thanks Chai.
I’m seeking info on anyone who has changed the Delco for a Sanden compressor and it it’s worth it.

Like Chai, I ended up going for a straight swap - new for old - as the whole job was already going to be pricey (in 2018).
Works well.

Looking forward to hearing about, and seeing, your new TD!

Hi Julian - Great to hear you have found yourself (another) nice wagon. What did you do with the Lang ?

This looks like what you are after .... https://klimakit.com/product/w123-sande ... grade-kit/

I bought an AU made up adaptor kit (not the one above) a few years ago with a sanden compressor that I have never fitted because my R4 compressor has not yet failed ... It has a compressor as well. If your interested, PM me.

Is the compressor stuffed as in the internals are worn out, or as in it leaks? The R4 internals are not that bad IMHO and only fail if run for a long period of time on low gas levels (the gas cools the compressor as well and the vehicle occupants). If it is only leaking a $40.00 seal kit will sort it.

The Lang was too much car for us. No space for the dog, gearbox governor sticky on reassembly following resealing and a few other issues, and the love died.

The 300TD is from Sydney.

John, I had a country mechanic look at it and he said it leaked and also failed to energise the clutch. I haven't removed yet.

This guy has a few good W123 videos, and this one is his evaluation of the Sanden compressor conversion he'd done.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XsvmXj ... zr&index=7

His aux fan wiring modification with extra relay does work as well.

All the best with your A/C, there sure are a few things that have go right to get it cooling. Working on my mighty 240D at the moment and it is slow going, from the blower not coming on (new ignition switch), to dead aux fan (pull fan apart and fix) to faulty pressure sensor (replace sensor), broken temp control switch (fix switch), dead compressor relay (replace), the list goes on and on. It will get fixed though, probably just at the end of summer up here in the North.
