W212 gearbox flush and differential oil change

Post by Bartman4800 »

So I just purchased a 2012 E250CDI with 106k on the clock.

According to the maintenance receipts the PO supplied, all maintenance was dealer performed, and the car received a gearbox flush at 55k

I got a B9 service code on the dashboard, which I gathered was a gearbox and brake fluid flush request.

I just had an indy German specialist shop on the phone and he claims my car only needs a gearbox flush every 120k, so next at 175k...

Who is speaking the truth here? He said he was happy to sell me a flush (for 720 aud), just that it was not necessary with the 7G+ gearbox.
I do notice the box is a bit jerky when cold in the first 2 gears.

Also, when does the diff oil need to be replaced?

Thanks for the responses.

Bart

I just called the dealer. They said it should be done each 5 to 6 years and the car will ask for it but you must have the correct software to read that.

So off for a transmission service it is. If I had access to a hoist I would do it myself...

Bart,
I cannot remember doing any gearbox work with my S211 E63 over 10 years and 250,000 kms ... is that at all necessary?

Was your AMG a manual perhaps?

The 7G auto needs more maintenance...

It was the 7G in AMG version, that's why I answered. But I could be wrong. When I looked through the list of repairs I couldn't find it, but there's a chance I didn't make a note of it and it was part of an inspection.

Bart,
I just called my dealer (got curious). Up to a certain year (definitely before 2012) it was at 60,000kms once and then not anymore (my AMG f.i.). After that, there is a code that comes up every 4-5 years ... so I guess the above mentioned is correct. Sorry!

My W212 was done last year at 60,000 K's at the stealer - it was $500.00.
The change doesn't involve the whole amount of fluid - approximately half comes out. They don't do a complete flush.
Hence every 60,000 K's.

I changed all fluids at 60,000 - Engine oil, Diff, Brakes, coolant, transmission

Car has 66,000 K's now - still drives like new.

Your service book should have all various service intervals for things like transmission fluid changes. It will be in kilometers traveled and/or time elapsed. Some only have the first change interval, which IMHP is a very odd way of looking at long term ownership....

Thanks again John, for the input. Oil flush is booked in at an indy German specialist near work.

Where in Australia do I buy quality parts for a car like this (besides the stealer)? Perth would be ideal, but further if needed.
I used FCPeuro in the past (worth the wait) but they do not do MB diesels of this period because Benz took them off the dealer floors....

I have a vibration in the steering wheel and in the pedals that is of an annoying frequency, so I think at least the gearbox mount (and maybe also the engine mounts) are due.

Also, I see parts like these from Febi/Bilstein and Lemforder available. Are these OEM suppliers for MB?

Hi Bart,
afaik Bilstein and Lemfoerder are, as well as Meyle. Febi can be so or so, sometimes good, sometimes not. Nevertheless I used the parts if available.

I don't know about Oz, but here in Germany it is sometimes (!) cheaper to order at Mercedes than from those parts suppliers; I would definitely check prices before.

Thanks Thomas.

So far I had to go to the dealer to get an oil filter and a fuel filter.
The oil filter was double that of a ryco (44 aud), and the fuel filter was.......255 aud.

Granted, the fuel filter has a heating element in it (parts guy said my car was one of the few models, why would you need this in Oz?)

By the way Thomas, do you still have access to the EPC? I am a member of the MBCCWA and should get access through that. When I finally got in, it said that only commercial partners still have access...

Hi Bart,
at the moment I still have access to it, however I have heard, that this club-member-access will be cancelled finally at the end of the year. I don't understand it, because staff at the counter will have to do much more, if I have to ask for every number ... but that's higher management
