Differential noise " whine".

Post by newMercowner69 »

For ex amount of years,
I've been hearing a noise which at 1st assumed&thought it was driveline related,
So replaced the center bearing with housing (genuine stealership MB one),
Noise is still there,
Got someone to sit in the far back seat,
Where he seemed to think it's rear axle/hub/wheel bearing noise?......
The noise is constant whether accelerating or decelerating,
Same person felt where the pinion is&said it felt hot,
Can the pinion bearing both possibly be the cause&if so,
Is it possible to replace without having to remove the differential?.

It seems that special tools are required - after removing the differential.

Might be easier to find a whole real axle assembly and hope the diff doesn't whine.

Can anyone recommend a MB differential specialist preferably in either north-east/northern or outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne to do the repair?.

Would changing to a heavier grade (viscosity) differential oil get rid of the noise?,
As i've had the differential oil changed MB recommend changing it every 90000 km's?.

All bearings make a certain amount of noise, even when new. This is why everything is rubber mounted. We have seen several examples where rear axle noises turned out to be collapsed rear subframe mounts transmitting noise into the cabin. Change the mounts and noise goes away. Generally this is a noise that is 100% road speed dependant. IE: no change if on or off the accelerator and doesn't come and go at certain speeds. Best example was a very nice W114 280E whee someone had changed the diff twice with no improvement. We changed the subframe bushes and fixed the diff noise. Have never seen a W202 do this, but it would be worth checking.

Could the whine be fuel pump related?,
In ALL of my previous services i've always had the fuel filter replaced,
& I noticed that when doing between 40-50kmh up a hill,
"Wagner" is gutless has nearly virtually no power,
I have to lift of the accelerator pedal& depress again,
This problem (low speed lack of power/torque),
Appears when either in D or in 2nd,
&When i shift the lever to the R/H.....

Unlikely, is the noise road speed dependent? IE, gets worse the faster you go, usually to the point where other noises drown it out by the time you get to 100kmh?
If it will rev out to max revs then the fuel pump/filter should be OK. I would be looking at the air mass sensor first if it drives ok, but is gutless. Best done with a scan tool that can read live data.
