R129 parts and soft top repair

Post by TheHarkster »

Hi there, I'm new to the forum and I have recently acquired a 1995 SL500 R129 (which I just drove across the Nullarbor to Adelaide with a mate and had the top down most of the way, fabulous trip btw) and would like to know if there are any places in Perth WA that would be the right ones to replace the plastic windows in my soft top that are cracking on the crease lines or is there a better solution?

Thanks for any input.

Hello and welcome. There are few cheap options for this issue. The R129 soft top is supplied new in two sections. The first one being the section above your heads and the other the rear section with the three windows. It is very difficult to just replace the rear section without damaging the front and even if you do it, then due to the sun fade on the front it looks like a very obvious repair. Likewise for removing the rear and just sewing in new windows.

if the car is a long term keeper, I would just bite the bullet and get the entire roof replaced.

Sorry I don't have any good news.
Kind regards, / Mit freundlichen Grüßen,

Thanks John, any suggested places to get the job done here in Perth, that have experience in doing this job, Ive looked up the you tube on it and it would appear to be a job for the experienced. Ive also searched up the web and seem to find that the german made tops by KHM seem to be the best and they use the Wopavin window material and the Sonnenland Plus fabric. Ive also seen Robbins mentioned as well as being an ok product, any view on this?

Thanks for any help.

Hi David,
here in Germany KHM has a very good reputation in what they're doing, so I guess you make no mistake in getting the softtop from them.

Thomas
