W115 220 Carb

Post by hazzac181 »

Hi all,
I have a '72 220. I've not read raving reviews on the Zenith/Stromberg(?) carburettor fitted to the M115. My carburettor is running rich/flooding, and is fouling plugs and causing the engine to run terribly. It is undrivable. My questions are as follows: are there rebuild kits available for these? I have tried one prior and had to put the original gaskets back in for a secondary diaphragm looking item as the replacements did not fit. To that end, is there a mechanic in the greater Melbourne (or Gippsland) region that is familiar with these engines/carbs? I am out of my depth here.

I have also considered replacing the carb. Has anyone done this? Is there a known swap? Ultimately, I am just looking for the car to run smoothly, I am not too fussed RE originality (although a rebuild of the original would be preferable. It is worth noting that the auto choke has been replaced with a manual unit fitted to the front of the carb.

If anyone has any experience/pointers, that would be greatly appreciated.

Harry

Hi Harry,
I cannot help you with the carbs as I have zero experience in it. However, there's a great W114/115 wiki in Germany ... but in German. Maybe you can either read it or translate the parts about the "Vergaser" (carb), Zenith, Stromberg etc.

There's quite a few articles about overhaul, fault finding, etc.

Thomas
