Good Adelaide Mechanic????

Post by gorms36 »

Hey everyone,

I've just purchased 2 Weber carbys to replace the Zeniths on my w114 230.6 and need to find a good reliable mechanic that can fit and tune and not charge the earth. I know a few of you will hate that im doing this conversion but as you know, the zeniths are not to easy to rebuild or retune if you leave the car for 6 months to a year due to working away. I also know that a few of you have had this conversion done and if easy enough, will pay handsomely for it to be completed.

So, any help in advance is great. Adelaide mechanics, list them below.

Thanks heaps guy and have an awesome day.

We will not hate you for the conversion at all, since a few members have done it with great success.

There is even an elaborate write up on how to do the conversion.

You need a carburetor specialist, not a normal mechanic. An old school Mercedes specialist who is still able to tune carbs is great too.

Since you are in Adelaide, get in contact with David (Pastelgrey300D), who has done the conversion on his finnie (very similar engine).

Pastel used one of the Redline kits I reckon - fitted it himself to good effect, but they do come jetted etc for the engine if you tell them. And I think it comes with all the linkages etc. I think they used to cost about $1k, which is probably about the starting point if you got someone to rebuild the Zeniths, but with the risk that they could have bigger issues, warpage etc. So I can see the logic of fitting them if having issues and chances are more reliable long term. Although you will often read the suggestion that every Zenith carb made is rubbish and can't work properly. Old cars now but I have had them work perfectly over extended periods of many years. Its a bolt on item though, hidden under the original air cleaner - I don't think it would bother anyone (even if it was their business!). The conversion I wouldn't be doing is replacing the Solex on the M110 motors with a Holley etc. (like had been done on mine), because they are quite different in choke sizes from primary to secondary, but the solex seems much more likely to have issues of warpage and there isn't a similar carb to replace it with... but i digress!

Adelaide mechanics - Eric at Silver Star service and resto could do it but very busy, Barry Green at Norwood or Davide Frada at Aldinga now, is doing work again but all of them don't have a dyno, so if you don't have a redline kit and just a couple of the right model webers with unknown set up, then you might want to try Carby Sales and Service/ Kent Town Dyno at Woodside. I just tried googling a contact number and can't find one. Both of these famous old Adelaide companies were bought by the same guy who has shifted it all to Woodside. I found him from trying to call Kent Town dyno and the call went through to his number. I'm sure I could find a contact for him if needed. I hope he is still in business because he has substantial stock of old school stuff and great old school knowledge.
