AC compressor pulley bearing W211

Post by Ivanerrol »

The W211 AC compressor pulley bearing is making a racket.
The car is a 2004 model E240 with all of 112,000 Ks on it.

Inquiries to the usual suspects all say that the compressor needs to be replaced. :banghead:
It’s a $20 or less bearing in the pulley. The AC is working fine other wise. Had it tested - does its job, gas is ok, gets cold etc etc etc.
Change out the compressor is a $1,000 job.
De gas the system, get a replacement compressor, install it and Regas.
Ridiculous.
The front pulley is accessible easily.
I’m going to give it a bash - just remove the pulley and get the bearing replaced. There’s lots of youtub videos - although none with the compressor still in the car.
How hard can it be? :glasses: :glasses:

This will mean the W211 will be down until I fix it.
The W204 is at the workshop awaiting parts from Germany (another few weeks)
I hope the W211 doesn’t shite itself. If it does I’ll be buying a Lexarse.

I managed to buy a low K compressor - 66,000 k's on the clock of the donor car.

Here's where the pulley is - it's the one at the bottom of the image with the brown plug on the end. Plenty of space.
IMG_7709.jpg
So removed the pulley from the donor compressor on the bench.
IMG_7704.jpg
Used a bicycle inner tube cut to length and a strap type oil filter removing tool to hold the pulley steady while undoing the front bolt.

There are a couple of circlips to be removed. There's one holding the pulley on. My circlip pliers were too small to remove it so reverted to screw drivers. I'll get a bigger pair of circlip pliers to do the job while the compressor is in the car.

Here's the bits and pieces.
IMG_7706.jpg
punched the bearing out of the pulley using a large socket and rubber mallet.

All to no avail. That bearing is just as bad as the one in the car.
I'll have to source the bearing by itself.

IF you have access to a press ,
Better to use that to both press out&in the bearing,
SOME model Mercs the bearing is "swaged " inside the pulley&CAN'T be pressed ou,
I.e ALL one piece,
What state are you in?,
As i can etc supply either bearing or pulley.

Northeastern inner Melbourne suburb.

Bearing slips in and out easily. Commonly replaced overseas.

Can you measure the bearing?,
I.e. bore ID/shaft size, OD&W (thickness)?,
There will be both a brand&part number on the rubber seal part of the bearing,
What brand/model A/C compressor is it?.

The one I got off is the spare one on the bench.
I'm about to attempt it while on the car.

Surprising no brand name on the bearing. - Just a Made in Japan.
But it's a 35x52x12

Compressor is a Denso 7SEU17C - used on many German and other cars. There's a variety of pulleys and clutches that go on them.

Removed the pulley while it was still on the car.
The circlips are a doosy.
Lucky I had one on the bench to practice with.
IMG_7712.jpg
Getting it back on will be much easier. More room to use the circlip pliers.

Bad news is. The pulleys are made of plastic. Over the last 15 years the plastic has gone hard and brittle and broken off.
IMG_7716.jpg
So now its necessary to buy the whole pulley and bearing assembled.

You need to buy the whole kit in Australia - Pulley and clutch + $320.00

Ordered just the pulley from O/S

Does the price inc the bearing?,
As per our telephone conversation on tuesday,
It's all 1pc i.e. bearing is integral built /"swaged" in ,
I.e. bearing is part of the pulley,
I'd be looking for a steel pulley,
Some of the jap bearing companies make&list them.

New pulley comes with the bearing.
That AC Place you ,mentioned - they only sell the whole clutch kit - $340.00 (Which is a little bit better than $585+Gst at the stealers)

You can buy the original MB Clutch kit in Jakarta for AU$240 - I have outlaws there.

sounds like fun
when my w210 did a compresser i got a replacement from the wreckers for 65.00 i changed it over( did it myself because i could reclaim and regas .. but i used hychill Minus 30 refrigerant no license required even though i have one but didnt want to buy a couple off kgs of r134 to add 800 grams or something )
Natrad would probably charge you 50 bucks to dump your gas go home fix it go back .......and then $ 200 maybe to leak test ,vacuum out and regas

Replacing the pulley was an easy job.

There's a guy in the Northern Melbourne suburbs who just does aircon regas from his van. You ring him up and he comes around. You just need to supply some 240v to power his pumps.
Charges $200 to evacuate and dispose the old gas and oil and then fill the system up again. Also puts a trace dye in.

I had him come around one time and evacuate and dispose the gas on my W202. Then I changed the compressor and drier, he then refilled the system. $200.00
