300CE W124 Triangular (sort of) plastic trim pieces rear door cards.

Post by crazycrowbar »

G'day forum members.
Im after the L and R hand side plastic trim pieces that sits on the side on top of the back door cards.
I don't have a idea what the correct name for the parts is.....
Very thin cover kind of triangular and curve on the sides where it slides on top of the door cards.... At the bottom part of the plastic covers is a thin aluminium strip that attach to the small little rear windows frame.
I need both sides, and I'm not fussy about the colour.
Or perhaps someone in a similar situation who made up their own ones?
Any help will be very much appreciated.
Thanks guys!

That looks like a perfect candidate for 3D printing!

Hi,
have you tried Mercedes, if they're still available? As the pieces aren't that big, I might send them to you from Germany, which should be around 47 or 63 Euros shipping. So if you give me the part number, I can check for you.

Regards
Thomas

The same part on a W126 SEC is not available - might even be the same part - look the same.

There is a thread on Benzworld where someone was going to remake them, wanted to gather numbers, people were coming in from all over the world and demand was over 50 within days was my recollection...... then time past, people offering money up front, a sting of 'I'm busy' type responses...... never happened! I'm sure if someone could do a run of say 100, you would sell them in a couple of weeks. But at what point do you think the number is beyond individual 3D printing and becomes a moulding? It has a rough finish on it that I thought would probably be difficult to replicate without moulding and also difficult to paint, assuming that doing them in individual colours would be too hard.

With 3D printing, you would have to prime, fill, sand and paint.

We built quite a few prototypes that way of housing for industrial applications, which had double curved surfaces.

If you want an "off the machine" perfect product in the correct colour with the right surface finish, injection moulding is the way.

However you would be at least 15k out of pocket before you made a shot...

Can i use a 3d printer to make a cheaper injection moulding machine! Same issue with trying to get the right rubber screen moulding and quarter vent rubbers for an early morris minor (that I came up against) - once simple and common parts become prohibitively expensive to reproduce.... and you can't do it on a 3d printer.

Flat panel in the right colour matched paint will probably look fine, but just a shame to not be able to reproduce that pattern that is across all the interior trim bits for our cars.

Hi,
in case it helps, the ad says it's a reproduction and it is black. For other colours to contact the seller.
