W116 280S - V8 conversion

Post by gez110 »

Hi Guys,

I have a 1975 W116 280S, The original M110 carbie motor is stuffed (seized solid) but the car in general is in great shape with one original owner prior to me.

My question, is it possible to fit a M117? V8 to my car. I'm fairly handy with spanners. I'm assuming the engine mounts would be different, but would I need to fabricate new mounts to the chassis? I know of a rusted out, but running 1975 450, or alternatively a mid eighties W126 380 that I could buy, so I'd have all the fuel lines, management etc.

Thoughts?

Cheers

I doubt the mounts are different and you could always swap the subframe across. That might in fact be easiest with springs rates etc. I think the trickiest bit would be swapping all the wiring/fuel system, but if you have a whole car, I imagine all of that could be swapped. You would want to change the diff too for the different ratio. Radiator could be different size perhaps, but if it is together and running, then anything you need can be swapped. My only comment is don't underestimate the amount of time involved, but would be rewarding to save a good car out of the two. And no doubt not impossible with the 380, but an extra degree of difficulty I would think.

Cheers Craig, I've just been offered a good replacement m110 motor, so I'll be dropping that in for now.

I'm still planning on checking out both potential donor cars though. I'm well used to involved conversions, I've almost completed an auto to Manual conversion on my Alfa 166 v6, Italian electronics are something else!
