Airbagging my w114

Post by Ambo »

Hi guys as the title says I'm going through the process of installing air bags suspension on my 1973 280 w114.

I've just been going through it over the last couple of months for a road worthy.

New carb, it had a 350 Holley conversion done by the previous owner, I just put a reconditioned one on it.

I'm going to run 15inch bundts on it.

And the most significant change will be to the suspension.

I wanted to do something alittle different with the boot setup, so I went for a live edge timber slab with epoxy resin centre, to mount all the components to.
I'm running an Accuair e-level rideheight management system with wifi i-level, which allows you to control it from a paired phone. I want to get it engineered and use it as a daily driver.

Hope you guys respect my decision to make these modifications to a vehicle which would have otherwise just sat around and rusted away.
All components are bolt in except the lower shock mounts, allowing me to return it to stock suspension anytime if required.

Thanks Ron
God bless

If it's engineered, then You'll get no grief here.

Just be aware that the CV boots and trailing arm bushes do not like the excessive articulation and will give out sooner than what would be considered a 'normal' service life.

If you replace your subframe bushes, trailing arm bushes and swaybar bushes, the rear diff mount, you should be okay for quite a long time (years). However if you are dropping it on it's belly every time you park up, then the wear in the cv boots will likely be the first thing to go, followed by the trailing arm bushes. There are also urethane trailing arm bushes available from k-mac (eccentric bolt) but not having used them I cannot comment on their longevity.

If you are going to the trouble of engineering it, then I would absolutely replace the subframe bushes (both ends) with genuine MB ones (do not bother with aftermarket they simply do not last).

Some progress pics would be good too. and let us know who is doing the engineering for you.
