C180 1997 w202 wiper staying in centre
Hi Guy's,
My Mercedes is a 1997 November built C180 W202.
For some reason my wiper arm now stays in the centre of my windscreen. You can stop it some times with the switch if you are lucky. Before it was stopping 10 to 15CM from where it use to stop. I have removed the hole wiper system and cannot find any problems like nuts lose and it is well greased too.
Any one know what is wrong with the wiper stopping when it should stop down at the bottom right hand side That is when to turn it off???
Cheers
John

Does it stop in the same place every time ? Or just stops where ever it is when the power is cut.
If the former - sounds like its home position is confused. Has it jumped teeth ?
If the later, then the always active line has lost is +ve

It's the wiper arm pivot, wheel,
It's a plastic wheel with a threaded stud at one end,
I've had this problem twice,
The 2nd time I had to have &replace this pivot gear wheel. Unless they're regularly greased (according to my independent MB garage NO ONE greases them as labour intensive ¬ included in servicing although it should be). NO stealer ship, wrecker or MB spare parts sell it, nor list as a seperate item. The gear wheel strips,
Which in turn strips the shaft,
I have a spare one if you need it,
I can post photos/pictures of what it looks like.

Re: C180 1997 w202 wiper staying in centre
I did remove the hole wiper system looking for any thing that would stop the wiper arm stopping in its place. But I found nothing. Now it stops when you turn the control stick to stop it in the same place all the time which is in between the centre to where it should stop. It' drivers you seeing the arm sitting there. I don't think the gear is striped because it stops in the same place all the time now.
So how do you get it to stop where it should stop and I suppose this would be a problem when you take the car in for a pink slip.
Cheers

Re: C180 1997 w202 wiper staying in centre
Well I have removed the wiper assemble again and before I did that I remover the cover off the wiper motor. With the wiper arm just off centre you can see the space gap on the metal plate. If I move by hand the wiper are down where it should park. the gap in the pink is about 45 degrees (9.45) if where it stopes now that gap it about 28 degrees (9.28). So is that the wheel that is slipped a geateeth or move to park the wiper where it stops now??????

You have to remove the wiper cowl,
& All vents to access the actual wiper arm pivot,
It sits underneath the wiper arm itself,
The wheel is part of the wiper motor away&NOT the linkage. Don't under any circumstances attempt &try to position the wiper arm if its stuck in the middle,
Or if the wiper blade is sticking out too far. Call your independent MB specialist & explain the problem,
Or a MB auto electrical specialist. My MB independent specialist did the repairs for me,
I supplied the gear wheel,
Which is NOT a seperate part sold by both MB & or MB parts specialists,
I found mine on EBay
There's a QLD based company that does make them,
If you're lucky like I was,
You won't have to replace both the linkage assy& wiper motor.

Yes it's the wheel's teeth that have stripped,
Or the splines on the shaft that have stripped &worn,
Causing the linkage (wiper arm),
To stop in the center &get stuck.

Re: C180 1997 w202 wiper staying in centre
Hi Guy's,
Thank you for the info. I decider again to remove the wiper system from the car and check it out again. Because I found by taking the cover off where the wheel is. Living the wiper arm where it stops on the windscreen I could see why it stopped where it dose. So I removed the shaft with the wheel on it and no sign of striped teeth. But the shaft at the end didn't look too well. So I cleaned it up and reset the wiper arm to where it should stop and the wheel I marked before I removed it and put it in it's right place. Tightened up the nut with my impact gun and checked it in the car to make sure the wiper arm was in the right by getting it to work. All ok now and that was the problem. The shaft may need to be replaced if it does happen again.
Cheers and thanks to all.
