new 114

Post by beerbaron »

So ive rescued a w114 280 sedan which has been dormant for a number of years
need some TLC and hoping the wise people on this forum can help
so be prepared for lots of questions :)

drove it home today and noticed a few things
front suspension , seems very soft and spongy. lots of play in the steering wheel
assume all the rubbers in the front are gone ? any idea ?

Transmission - havent done a filter kit through it yet ,but noticed it over revs when going from 2nd to 3rd ? again any ideas

Rear suspension , had a look underneath and looks ok as they are replacements.
Brakes - all good , replaced the pads and brake hoses, cleaned the calipers and replaced the fluid
engine , oil and oil filter replaced , new sparks and leads
diff , replaced diff oil
interior , seats are clean but have lost their firmness . door cards and roof lining need some work. dash cracked.
body - the worst part -- -needs new floors all round and rust removed from spare wheel well. Looking to source new floor pans from overseas and somehow rescue the brackets for the accelerator, seat frames and handbrake

Nice find - I like the colour! Is it the single or twin cam 280 engine?

Front end sounds like you will most likely be up for shock absorbers (they are probably ancient anyway).

Steering play could be a combination of worn tie rod ends and worn linkages, worn idler arm bushings, they are all still available new and relatively cheap. There is also adjustment in the steering box itself that can take up some of the slack, but you don't want to tighten it up too much otherwise you risk the gear jamming and/or the steering won't self-centre after turning a corner. Also, check the coupling between the steering column and box - they can wear out pretty easily and once the bushings go you'll get lots of slack.

So the car needs the floor pans replaced
a few crash shops ive spoke to suggest new pans , rather than cutting out old ones
can anyone recommend a place to source new floor pans ( not just the sections )
found a few places overseas, but they are for LHD vehicles ( does it matter ? )

Got the same rust issues with my '70 W114. And dash problems. I could only find floor sections not whole floors. No one seems to have any in Oz. You can find them in the U.S to Iran.

Wiring shouldnt be a problem , its just all the centre console wiring ( lights , heater/aircon etc )

and yesT-Modell
I worked at ZF Lemforder when they had operations in Australia...

Alas , with the collapse of the auto manufacturing industry here , ZF operations scaled back dramatically and all they have is ZF service distribution centre

The only positive , is that the old ZF factory and a small number of workers( a lot were made redundant ) are now associated with this

If you are after more parts, there's currently a W114 230 sedan at Upullit Gillman. Engine and trans are gone but still a few bits.

Think that one at upullit has had most of the good bits removed

Another keen buyer picked up the manual gearbox out of it

thats most of the structural stuff done...
next is rust proof it ( por15 etc ) , then some dynamat then carpets

still got some smaller bits under the dash ( on the passenger side )...suspect the windscreen seals are to blame for this..
hoping that i dont have to pull the dash out
