W213 opionions
Anybody out there with a W213?
More specifically one of those E220d All Terrains?
I'm almost ready to push the button on one - Demo model with 2K Kilometers for a very cheap price.
I've driven it and it seems rather "Dull"
However it has a huge rear cargo area - enough to fit three of my Push bikes inside with a couple extra on the roof racks.
Not a fan of the big star in the grill but it can't be changed out to the familiar bonnet star and grill because the forward facing radar is integrated into the grill star.
I'd rather have smaller wheels instead of the standard 20 inch ones with painted on rubber. - I'll see if that can be negotiated.
Any opinions would be appreciated.

Re: W213 opionions
You? A W213? So new? Do we have to be worried about you?
I can only tell you, that they drive around here a lot and I haven't heard anything negative so far. Just the usual about new cars ... as you know. Imho I'd buy a normal station wagon, because those "I'd like to be an SUV, but I don't want to look like one" is not my thing.
In the end it's the same technology as the C/S-Class. Just can't see you being happy in it
Regards
Thomas

Re: W213 opionions
The only E wagon available in Australia is the All Terrain otherwise it's SUV.
The C Wagon is a little bit small for me.
The E wagons load capacity far exceeds the SUV's.
I've previously bought new Benz's however I have been in the situation where there has been tax write off so the horrendous depreciation is sort of amortized.
I've been checking through the Australia medias review of this car and nearly all give a n80% + rating. One thing common is the opinion that it's a better cruiser than a city driver.
One of the issues I see is those two 10 inch LCD screens used as instrument cluster and Command. They're a one off for the W213. What are the long term prospects for these? Will they be available in case of breakdown in 8 - 10 years and will they cost more to replace than the value of the car itself?
W203 Command screen being a case in point.

I wouldn't worry about that, because you cannot change it. That's the way it goes and more and more of those displays will come. I think they look cool and you could also worry, that some major spare parts for old Mercs aren't available anymore.
Thomas
P. S.: Surprised, that they have stopped selling the "T-Modell" down under. Oz is an SUV country obviously ...

Re: W213 opionions
SIUV's are so popular that most of the car manufacturers in Australia have given up on car based wagons.
More SUV's are sold than sedans.
SUV's sales have been given as the reason that Ford, GM and Toyota ceased local veh9icle production.
W212' wagons sold but not robustly.
MB Oz gave up on Wagons with the W213. The All Terrain is designed to go up against the Audi, Volvo wagon based soft off roaders. Subaru with it's Outback out sells all others. It's hard to beat the Outback it's half the price of the Euro similar offerings. The Outback has most of the Benz technology at a third of the price. Plus you get some petrol sixes.
The All terrain I'm looking at is an '18 model with 2K's on it and it's fully loaded with extras'. It's 50 grand $$ off RRP.
Most of the 2 year depreciation is already off it.
(The bad news is that if you bought one at RRP you are in for a big hit).

Re: W213 opionions
I bought a E350d but couldn’t get the Treasurer interested in the E220d All Terrain when we were looking. I haven’t bought new since 2005 for anything. I am very happy with it, but driving away currently I must get the maps updated. Had a minor glitch with COMAND mapping one evening but ok after a restart. The screens and tech are great.Ivanerrol wrote: ↑Tue 18 Dec, 2018 10:42 pm Anybody out there with a W213?

I have read that some have the large grill star illuminated, but I don’t think I want to disable the radar which then happens.
I take your point on the low profile rubber. I would like 18" but might have to do that if I break one or two. I actually opted to go run-flat replacement, thinking they gave the rims a little more protection. Will ultimately see because I live in the part of Victoria that is poorly served for state maintenance. I cracked two rims on my previous car. 18" were optional downgrade and have specs available. The tyre OD diameter is a bit small as the indicated speed is 5% over actual at 100kph

Re: W213 opionions
Les,
The reason we have a 212.074 is because the 213 was just so bland in spec, and We would have bought the estate specifically EXCEPT for that hideous audi-esque allroad cosmetic package. So fake and cheap looking. heaven help anyone who buys one - they will never resell it.
In fact SWMBO was almost ready to move to an S class over the E!
In the end my 'reasoning' was that if we bought a certified used 212 or 463 or 166 then we could buy a far better spec'd vehicle.
I did not mind the E400 but the $ being asked for the base e400 was a joke.
And to be honest, I do not care about the 12.5L/100km avg fuel consumption for the last 26,000km, knowing how I enjoy the m157's SOUND.

Re: W213 opionions
Since the initial post I have sort of given up on a W213 e220d.
I managed to get one for a couple of days to try it out. The more I drove it the less impressed I was. Unrefined would be a term I'd probably use.
I did test drive a W212 2011 e350 wagon a year or so ago. It was a reasonable price but was unimpressed by the booming noise from the rear area.
The purpose of this vehicle is to do the two to four time a year trips Melbourne to Noosaville. I need a fair bit of room and space in the car to carry my bicycles and Wifey's makeup. The SUV's on offer don't have anywhere near the amount of cargo space the wagons do.
I'm an old softie and require a limousine ride for such a long return trip/journey. The C Class doesn't cut the mustard.
The W211 E240 serves the purpose at the moment. It does between 7.5 and 8.5litres/100k's on the trip.
And as Joe's SWMBO observes, the current replacement would be an S class - two SWMBO agree.

Re: W213 opionions
I would absolutely have driven an S class out from the dealer showroom - make no mistake.
My issue was simply price vs spec. the w222 is absolutely opulent even in base-spec compared to the w213 and IMO is a sublime package in it's current guise.
But the budget didn't extend to an 'optioned' S class. My guess is that in about 5 years time the 2017-> W222 is worth 50% of it's showroom price, it will be a more palettable proposition.
I would pick the 6cyl diesel for the torque, to move around a heavy lwb saloon over the petrol, especially considering the somewhat unjustifiable price premium of a 450 or 560 over a 400d
Just give it a few years... the prices of these will drop like a stone - as they inevitably do.
