My new old 190D

Post by Johnnojack » Wed 04 Jul, 2018 10:24 pm

Hi everyone, I have finally scratched an old itch and bought a Merc. It is a 1986 190D 2.5 auto. Seemed a bargain when I bought it but less of a bargain since I discovered how rust can be completely hidden under door seals and a few other gremlins. Good points: low mileage (if speedo can be believed) of 244,000km, no dents, good interior and seats, good paint with no scratches, motor runs well, new alternator, starter motor, a/c compressor, evaporator, shockers, reconditioned injectors. Fast glass and central locking working. Bad points: the rust under the door seals (all four), radio doesn't work, all fuel hoses rotten rock hard and leaking, (took out tank to replace the lot). Also a/c not working, directional air control not working, a few dash lights out and now the engine shut off device has stopped working. Despite all this I love the car and if you adjust your driving for the lack of power it is a joy to drive.

By the way it's a W202 not the early finny car. I don't know much about all the different models yet. I changed the Flexi discs and centre bearing carrier as the gear change was very harsh. Now it is much better but still thumps a bit when changing up,from 2 to 3 is the worst. Can this be fixed.

1986 - a car that age, wouldn’t the VIN give a clue as to the model?
What is your VIN?

It's pretty simple ... 1986 and the model 2.5 can only be a W201 ... my first Merc was a 1986 W201 ... photos help ...

Oops yes it is a 201 I wouldn't know what a 202 is if there's such a thing, Yes it looks like the red one. I managed to get the radio working, a Becker Grand Prix. Needs wiring properly as only the left speakers work and wires are just stuffed in the back of the bullet connectors. How hard is it to remove the ignition switch? as the shut off device itself works but ignition switch won't provide vacuum when needed.
