The Consolidated W126 SEC Coupe Related Info/Photos/Tips Etc

Post by KimB » Thu 10 May, 2018 7:01 pm

Hi all,

I had a look through the W126 Forum Section but could not find a Subject heading devoted to the SEC Coupe. Please prove me wrong if there is one and I will ask Admin to remove this Topic. I know I started the Consolidated W126 Coupe section under Cars for Sale, but zilch in the W126 section.

There are lots of posts in the W126 General section, so I thought it would be good if all future SEC posts could be entered under this new Subject heading.

So, if you have any info including articles, general info, photos, restoration/repair tips etc pertaining to any of the SEC models, here's a place for them.

Cheers

Does anyone know anything about this Victorian restoration?

I found a better quality video of the Wheeler Dealer 500SEC resto, (which I had previously posted in the general W126 section). They turn a basic 500SEC into an AMG tribute car.

Yes that was the orange 380SEC coupe owned by the Real Estate Agent "Ray Trowthe" back in the 80's
He had "CarShine" in Melb do the widebody conversion work as they were authorised Agents for AMG back then.
They got the panels and rims in from Germany to do the work which they carried out in their workshop
Here are some more pics

Thanks for the info Kim!

What color is it? Signal red? Does the car still exist today?

The photo above was taken in Melbourne in 1985, the guy on the left is Gary Barker who owned Car Shine, the guy on the right is none other than the legendary "Hans Aufrecht", one of the three founders of AMG! and the letter A in AMG

Car Shine became an agent for AMG, and Hans paid a visit
Car Shine were the first business in Australia authorised by AMG to do the conversions (probably the only as there were and still are very few AMG widebody versions in Australia and most of the handful that still exist today are locked away in collectors garages were imported)

Hans also came over to also see the special panel glue Car Shine were trying out as opposed to rivets, to attach many of the AMG body parts (bumper skirts etc). They were doubtful but and after witnessing it, started using it back in Germany. (Probably a 3M product)

That 1983 burnt orange 380SEC converted to a widebody in 1985 was the only SEC we got in Australia until the 560SEC was released and i assume we did not see any 560SEC's on our shores until 1986

Ray Trowthe sold the WB around 1987 and replaced it with a Porsche 928S4 we are led to believe.
One local who was so used to seeing the stunning SEC parked out front of the Real Estate Office every Friday (imagine seeing that wild coupe in the flesh back in 1985) could not believe that he sold the wild looking SEC and replaced it with a boring Porsche!! he was devastated it was gone

The coupe was never seen since?
So maybe it got traded in to the Porsche stealership it was on-sold to a local or overseas collector - sadly nobody knows what happened to it?

One thing is for sure it would have been an very expensive car for anybody to buy back then in 1987, so it would have had gone into the hands of a wealthy buyer.

Is Ray Trowthe still alive today? Anybody know of him over on the east coast.

Great info Kim! I didn't know much about AMG in Australia, but I know more now.

So my question is, do you have statues of Hans and his two AMG mates, alongside a statue of Bruno Sacco in your front yard Kim? Maybe something like below with his 560SEC!

Meanwhile, here's a nice speech by the great man himself, when he was inducted into the Hall of Automotive Fame in the US:
