W116 VIN Decode

Post by ngruzevs »

Chaps

I'm looking at a 450SE, but haven't been able to decode VIN# 116 032 22 087667 as detailed on radiator support panel.

Thanks

You're not looking at the plate with all the 3 digit option codes on it are you? I think that's the "data card" number or something.

Check the number against the one on the firewall or on the other plate on the rad support.

See viewtopic.php?f=25&t=24420 for some pictures of the cards on the rad support of my W123 - same idea on the W116 i believe.

The VIN number should be on the licence papers too.

Vin number before 1980 at not decodable electronically. MB only started putting datacards on file electronically with the release of the W126 and even then for the first few years there are quite a few that didn't seam to work.

You need either the datacard or a picture of the plate on the l/h side of the bonnet catch for us to help you. Data card should look like this:

Thanks for the decode.

Initially I just wanted to confirm delivery country, but looks to be UK. Assume you can also tell as rear demister has thick visible lines and interior trim is the velour felt?

Looks like owner has changed speedo, as I'm guessing it would have been delivered with a MPH speedo?

Also wanted to confirm if car is high compression, being UK delivered?

Yes, it is UK delivery.
I do not see pics of interior and demister.
Yes, speedo was changed.
Yes, it has engine with normal (not low) compression ratio.

Finally managed to clean up interior, it's come up really well.

It's amazing what a fresh set of plugs, leads and distributor cap does. Drove it last week just up and down the road, can't believe how well it goes.

Nice one! What plugs did you use?

That drivers seat looks to be in brilliant condition too - very comfy!

Thanks, it's coming along, but taking time. I swapped passenger base with driver base, as spring was broken on drivers seat. All seats were covered by sheepskin covers, so they still look like new now.

BTW, I used NGK BP5ES plugs
