Is the firewall cable harness hole round or oblong?

Post by berntd »

I can't tell for sure from what was left of my firewall/bulkhead.

I need to know if the upper cable hole near the brake booster is round or slightly oblong in the horizontal plane.

Maybe someone has a picture?
I think W114 might be similar.

I would go with round, never seen an oblong one, would be hard to get the grommet to seal.

We have a wrecked 450SLC at work, if you ring on Monday I can have a look for you.

Thanks.

My grommet appears a bit ibling at the back as if it qas in an obling hole. Could just be a result of rust though.
I just made a 44mm sample round hole and everything can fit through but the grommet is quite sloppy.

Then made a 38mm sample and I can just get everything through with difficulty.

I can't get the grommet through though.

Can't move ahead because the remnants I have left seem to have a flat part in the top of the hole indicating either a flat spot for licating or the top of an obling hole.

If so, I suspect 38mmx50mm or 38x45.

Dunno.

Nothing is simple.

Hallo Thomas, that looks much different to all I have seen.
It looks like a LHD?

In that case I need your left side (driver side)

Thanks Thomas.

I must say that I still can't recognise it but I do see a similar grommet still covering the hole. Is that a R107??

BTW: I have made the hole oblong for now 36x41mm.
It is not much oblong but I can still enlarge it later if I have to.

I wanted to send a picture but it us too big and I can't edit size on phone.

Yep, it's a R107; I don't have a better picture, but I'm pretty sure, everything's round ...

If the fusebox is on the right like ours, then the cabling will come through on the right.

It looks nothing like ours though. That big hole there is probably 3 times the size we have here. So yes, at that size, it can certainly be round and one can jyst throw the harness through it :-)
Or maybe they changed it later.
Anyway, thanks for trying but it can't help in this case.

Isn't it amazing that no pictures of the crucial details can be found.

Here you can just see the 2 grommets.

This was pre-restoration

Here is what I am working with and some progress on replairs around that hole section.

I made that hole the way I think the original one was. If it turns out wrong, I can enlarge it to round still

That right section is now nearly finished bar cleaning/ grinding all the welds and fitting the newly fabricated horizontal strut section .

I have so far had to do a lot of complicated fabricating on this car so far but it is coming along nicely.

John, I did call you but you were so busy that I decided not to disturb you.

Bernt
