Finding parts...

Post by Mercmad » Sun 16 Jul, 2017 11:49 pm

Amongst the projects i am fighting with right now is a finny that the owner bought from the UK... but when it arrived here i knew the car!. It may have been bought from the UK but it comes from Brisbane . But what a bomb! So far i have replaced the doors and front guards, the left inner front chassis rails, the inner sills, outer sills, jack points and now the right rear quarter threw up so really nasty s ,the bottom of the spare wheel box had 'replaced' as had the lower part of the quarter panel . The car has also been liberace'd and the quarter panel was damaged and the resulting repair was concealed under a layer of bog 15mm thick!
So after buggering about for a week trying to get the panel back into shape I realized it was too far damaged to repair with rust underneath and stretches everywhere .it must have been hit by a bulldozer i think, then they used the bulldozer to try and straighten. I made a new one .I have roughed it out and it needs some parts welded to it but it's makes sense to do this as body filler is not only expensive ,it takes a certain skill to get it right.

I also had to make new skins for the doors ,which although they looked god were basically full of bog too.

Thanks for pics - great seeing that level of work done. There were some channel 44 shows and there was a whole rear quarter of a monaro i think it was that the guy had formed from one sheet of metal...... just to show you can!

That was pete Thomasini .I have met him a few times, real nice bloke and the young bloke helping him was after a job at the place where i was but the boss reckoned he wouldn't be any good.. (no good at slapping in the resto paste) . The guy who taught Pete , Tom Peach was a wizard with the sheet metal, having been taught himself back in the days when there were coachbuilding companies here. He had even been sent to study body panel beating in the UK on a special scholarship .A lot of blokes in OZ have learned a lot from those two. Tom Used to make the monaro panels at home in his garage on the floor (!) for rare spares. I've got a pic somewhere of a roundie 220SE Coupe rear guard Tom made for a customer .

EK Dave - Can you get in his ear and get him to knock out some SEC wide body panels in steel.
