Hektor was offered by Alistair (ADow) free to a good home.
https://ozbenz.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t= ... 23#p182276. Whilst I initially considered it for parts, when picking it up my assessment was that whilst it had had a few dings and been rear ended, it had very little rust and the motor ran fine. Most of what seemed wrong was just the typical wear that looking through this forum there are plenty of threads on, so it could put back on the road if wanted by someone. My eldest came with me to pick it up and I asked him if he wanted it for his first car. Whilst historically indifferent to my obsession, I suspect his relief at not having to schedule his car usage in with the rest of us coupled with economic necessity (particularly the BioD option) fueled his positive response. That, and his friends telling him it’s a cool car to have. So I drew up a list and set about bringing Hektor back up to scratch.
1. Boot wouldn’t open - Compressed air in lock line to open, new vacuum actuator boot (pun intended) as per Tony WestOz’s instructions - Leak was also affecting vacuum for Trans
2. Central locking not opening – fuel lock actuator – replace boot.
3. Had been rear ended - Rear tail lights (thanks PastelGrey)
4. Had been rear ended - Rear bar (Thanks John G)
5. Installed factory Hirschmann
6. Doors wouldn’t stay open - 4 x Door check straps
7. RLH door glass stuck - Replaced Rear LH Glass Holder
8. Rattling and vague gear shifter - Gear lever bushes
9. No reverse lights - Fixed reverse / neutral start switch as per Ivanerrol’s instructions
10. Trans would not shift up - Replaced Vacuum Valve + fixed boot lock to fix trans shifting issues
11. Wouldn’t start easily – replaced Glow plugs, valve adjustment
12. Wouldn’t idle nice – Valve Adjustment, Injector clean and balance, new engine mounts
13. Leaking Fuel – New fuel return lines
14. Leaking oil – Rocker cover gasket and then grind the stops on the rocker cover a bit to get purchase on the gasket
15. Rattles – Leaking fuel caused engine mounts to collapse, replaced
16. Key about to jam in ignition – Replacement barrel, rekeyed all locks to new key
17. No Odo – Superglue Odo
18. Clock stopped – Capacitor replacement
19. Leaking steering box – Had a good working one in 230TE wreck, replaced
20. LH Headlight cracked - Upgraded headlights to “deluxe” version
21. LH Blinker cracked - Replaced
22. Various dings - Full respray (all externals off including roof channel – not a mask up job) to clear out all the dings
23. Replaced various side trims with straight ones to match now straightened panels
24. Glove box refused to close – Reglued and added a screw to spring retainer
25. Worn driver seat – Sheepskin covers
26. LH Side mirror rubber flapping around– Replaced
27. RH Side mirror wont hold setting – Replaced
28. Front LH Toe In bad (chewed up tyre) – Wheel alignment and front tyres
29. Fitted DAB+ adaptor, Blutooth and 200watt amp to original becker to get the tunes
30. Front and rear speakers upgraded
31. LH Seatbelt would not retract – Replaced
32. Pressure bleed brakes
As you can see, whilst “free”, if wasn’t really when you take into account all the above. That said, a huge thanks to Alistair for the car. Fortunately, aside from the respray and wheel alignment, the rest was DIY and a credit to this forum for teaching me how to over the years. RWC issued and now on club plates to give him 90 days motoring / year.
