This is my 1972 280SE 3.5 Mercedes Benz of Melbourne delivered that I rescued from a car port at christmas, it's complete with many new parts a little rust and a ton of receipts dating back to 1991 when the PO bought it and them spend 3 times what he paid for it on repairs i nthe first year and a half, the dash wood removed about 8 years ago for refinishing and them left on the back seat. :banghead: warp city here we come, so I'm looking for a replacement set.
She starts up every time but badly needs a tune and a drive and some TLC but a massive water leak into the living room and garage from next door has put it on the back burner for the short term but it has not stopped me from buying parts and another car.

Anyway, onto the pics:

I like the old one. The new one looks too much like a Camry or some other anonymous white goods on wheels for my liking.

Starman old chap, whilst you have very right to your opinion me thinks the be in a very small minority.
I am sure that all devotees of Paul Barcq and the great majority of the general public would disagree with you, even the driver of the E250 commented “what a beautiful car” the 300 was.
Sure, your W211 and its successor provide greater levels of safety that the 109 but I wonder if the electronic wizardry on which their safety improvements are based on will still be functioning when and if they ever reach 40 years of age.

109 vs 211 no contest.

109 wins.

almost all post 95 models have succumbed to the 'chintzy plastic' feel of modern high-volume production cars. Sadly, MB have not been able to make an interior without resorting to cheap plastic - and it shows.

Even the designo offerings are bland tasteless colour combinations devoid of character.

It is a sign of the generation gap. copycat designers who all went to the same schools now sharing their ideas with each other, all following the same textbooks and not showing a single facet of individuality.

It is like they all use the same computer application with an 8 bit colour pallette.

BORING.

Wholeheartedly agree that the current generation stars "have succumbed to the 'chintzy plastic' feel", hence my vehement (almost violent) disdain for the W212. We shall agree to disagree on the 109 vs 211 looks comparison, you cant explain what you like, you just do. FYI I am considering adding a W124 to my stable, also a fine looking star.

It's worth adding that the current EU regulations also require a minimum amount of recycled material in the production of new cars... what better way than through plastic?

These demands were never a concern when the 109 was made. So there's an out for anyone who claims to love the current crop of microsoft designo-car.

Starman old chap, once again I beg to differ, I know exactly why I prefer the 108/109 and 113 series over anything with a model number higher than W129,

Paul Bracq understood the benifits of not only seeing where you are going but also seeing where you have been, low waste lines and slim A, B & C pillars, big rear window enableing the diriver to see all four corners, and that's without the balanced look from all angles. Also helps when your backing into narrow packing spaces / garages.

Bruno Succo bombed out big time with that slab sided whale, the W140, pop up gadjets to to let you know where your a++e is, high back parcel shelf, yes I know you can install a reverse video camera, another electronic gadget to go wrong.

The era of 2000-2010 has been a bit of a dark age for MB. These models are very boring and common, however they seem to be turning around with the new models coming out. The E class coupe and convertible, update CL and S classes etc are getting a bit more soul to them. Hopefully they will continue to improve.

This is Astrid, my 1970 280SE. She is a new purchase due to me spotting and falling in love with an old late 60's Merc coupe outside my work which isn't too practical for a family of five (and not in my budget either). So I thought a W108 was more than a good compromise.

She was bought in NSW with a road worthy...but they don't count for much in Victoria so had to shell out another couple of grand to get her into shape - but all well worth it!.

I have not got the hang of attaching images onto this forum yet -but in the meantime Astrid hosts her own Facebook page (just search for her name and she will pop up). Have found it a great way of documenting the gradual restoration, with pics, comments, frustrations along the way - plus can then link issues I come across to other message boards, information etc. All good fun, especially during the winter as it is too cold and dark to do much work on her at night.

Looking forward to getting in touch with others that have the same w108 bug that I've just caught (a pretty severe case if I do say so myself)

Cheers

My 280SE 4.5 - Part I

Having owned a Benz now for almost 2 years and having been a forum member for almost as long, a posting in this section is well overdue. The car began life in 1970 as a W108 280S. However, the previous owner decided in the late 80's or early 90's, that a mere 2.8 litres was not near enough displacement for him, and so imported a 4.5L D-Jet engine from the US along with the associated drivetrain, and had it installed - no doubt at ridiculous expense. It had been his father's before he died, but then the son died, and I purchased it from the proverbial "little old lady", (his mum), who had in fact never had a licence.

You could of course buy a W108 4.5 in the US, but not here.

A few other changes were made, such as "Americana" headlights, upgraded brakes, column shift to floor shift, respray, headrests (wrong colour and wrong model, but I fixed that). It came with a horrible 80's radio, which I tore out ASAP and replaced with a Becker.

Purchased 24.11.09 in Sydney. Papyrus White with a perfect MBTex Palomino interior - protected by the usual seat covers, which I promptly removed. Inspected at the time by one Ben de Boer, who has a hoist at his house. I know there are some people on the forum for whom the NSW club is on the nose, but Ben was incredibly helpful to me, spending at least an hour under the car looking for rust and checking everything. He couldn't find any, so his advice was "buy this one." The reason for buying this particular car was the near perfect condition of the body and the interior. The larger engine was a bonus.

Drove back to Canberra with my daughter in the back. John Green was appalled by the state of the tyres - plenty of tread, but terribly cracked. The spare was the original - "Made in West Germany." The conversion was apparently done well, but they couldn't find room for the battery, which was thus in the boot, completely unsecured. This was soon fixed, but the rego people didn't notice this fault.

What I have done to it:
0. New tryes (forum sponsor).
1. Becker (eBay).
2. Headrests (eBay).
3. Stone Guards (Chris Stewart).
4. 4.5 badge (eBay) - holes drilled by John Green himself.
5. Electronic Ignition (Anthony Costello's).
6. AC fixed (forum sponsor).
7. "New" 3.5 radiator (forum sponsor) (it had come with a 2.8 radiator - as pointed out to me by Rob McGinley).
8. Replaced plastic gear shifter with chrome one (forum sponsor).
9. Proper 4.5 speedo. (eBay)
10. 3rd brake light (Billet Specialties, installed by forum sponsor).
11. Battery Box + Bracket.
12. Remote locking (Jaycar kit).
13. Powder coated air cleaner.

+ a lot of other stuff.

Here it is at Wee Jasper earlier this year:
W10811.jpg
W10822.jpg
W10833.jpg
This is what the engine bay looks like today:
W108B.jpg
Basically, full of ..... engine, although slightly less so than a 6.3.

Then on Sunday 24 July, 2011, about 1km from home, on a pitch black Coulter Driver in Canberra, a very very large kangaroo hopped out in front of the W108, and this was the result:
W108A.jpg
Kangaroo hopped away - car towed away.

Called the police, and then called JG.

A lot of non-structural, but expensive damage. Written off by Shannons - but I got to keep the "wreck". Repaired by Canberra Bodyworks, and the forum sponsor. Took 100 days, mainly because of Shannons deciding what to do, and then the panel beaters - who are infinitely busy. The W108 needed a hood + star + grille + left guard + radiator + AC (all supplied used by the forum sponsor), and a radiator support panel ( i.e. basically the front of the car, MB spares actually had one of these new, in stock) + new left light.

I got a replacement stone guard from Chris Stewart. One of the badges on the stone guard was mangled - but there are millions of these on eBay.

It was advertised on the NSW forum site for some time - this is where I saw it (that site is closed, but I have the photos from the add somewhere). It was advertised for a long time - it is really easy to buy an old Benz, but very hard to sell one.

Astrid Looks great. Much more class than any car I see on a daily basis (apart of course from the one in my carport).

Two questions:

(1) What is the switch to the right of the radio? - my car doesn't have one.

(2) Is the steering wheel offset i.e. does the middle pleat of the seat align directly with the centre of the steering wheel?
See:
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=13079&p=89007&hili ... eel#p89007

This is a really, really important question ....

Hi David,

That switch is for the electric sunroof - its a beauty - very big, car feels like a convertible with it open - is nearly as wide as the roof and opens up nearly half of the roof (I may be slightly exagerating)

I have another non-custom switches on the right hand side of the steering wheel which bug me as they have been cut into the wood paneling - one is for the electric arial (I dont think that is standard) and the other is what the previous owner has informed me was the cruise control that he got disconnected. I'm not sure if he was pulling my leg....but all i know is that it doesn't do anything.

I'm not sure about the steering wheel - the picture looks a little funny as it isn't nice and straight. I think it is a little off centre - why is this important? should I be worried??

here are a few more pics - I inherited a very clean engine bay so am trying my best to improve it even further. You can see the sunroof in one of the pics.

Astrid has her own facebook page as well - (sad but true- just search for her and she will pop up). its actually really quite handy for documenting all the stuff you do on your car, before and after pics etc. so there are lots more shots there if you are interested.

Cheers

Hi David

I just re-read my post....the sunroof (and the switch)is factory fitted - I dont believe the other two swtiches are.

The original becker is long gone - think I will get a new stereo from retrosound usa - as they look pretty cool and are in keeping with the style. the re-conditioned beckers with ipod connectivity are a little steep in price to get "approved"

I read your posts about the steering wheel offset a little while ago (and have just re-read them now) and I do think the wheel is a wee bit to the left. - but will check again tomorrow and get back to you. It sounds like this is a common thing??

Cheers

That switch is for the electric sunroof
This would explain why I don't have one ...

Your engine bay looks a lot shinier than my own, which would best be described as "functional."

Hi David,

yep the steering wheel is definitely a little to the left (around one to one and a half seat pleats).

That said, it is something I have never noticed until it was brought to my attention. With a steering wheel as big as what you find in a W108 it takes up half the dash board anyway so you can forgive a pleat or two.

Astrid looks fantastic. Great colour combination too!

David, I remember you telling me about the roo incident. That is indeed quite some horrible damage. Out of curiosity, after Shannons wrote it off and you subsequently repairing the car, are you still able to insure it with Shannons?

I would really like to see our two cars together one day. I think it would be pretty mad to see two white W108s together

Marc,
No problem insuring the car with Shannons again - they are happy to take my money. Collected it from MB Spares and drove it uninsured for 700 metres to Shannons and then got it insured again - at a higher valuation than previously.

Yes, we should get the cars together. My brother and mother live in the Southern suburbs of Sydney - so it should be possible in the no-too-distant future.

its proper air ride , has airbagit.com gear. 1/2" valves for fill and dump, 1/2" air line, 5gallon airtank, 1 compressor, 10switch airbag controller. can do individual wheel control side to side front and back and all 4 at once.

with the 1/2" gear its extreamly fast actually too fast for a oldschool cruiser, so iv put in restrictors in the dump valves so it releases the air slowly.

thank you :)

Long time silent member, thought it was time to show off my Rides.
Ive had the 69 w108 280sel for about 3 years now pulled it out of a shed in Maleny behind the Sunshine coast.
It has absolutely no history, had done alot of miles our estimate is 300k+, however after some tlc she came to life and is now on the road.
The 6.3 is a recent addition, we purchased from Sydney its in very good condiiton if not nearly showroom and all completely original with original purchase receipt and 112K full serviced miles.
Both cars are Horizon Blue (304g) however the w108 has had a respray and the colour tweaked a little as you can see they dont quiet match.
Any questions please me know.

I bought this the other day. Traded my wifes A190 on it. Feels a bit strange trading a 2001 model on a 1969 model.

I am guessing Mercmad would say "They both have no value", so perhaps you broke even. :joker:

I would prefer a W108 any day - even though it is bound to cause a lot more hassles and use several times as much fuel.

The drivers door bottom is pretty bad, due to the window being of its track and outdoors for 10 of its 17 year slumber, but im hoping that it can be repaired for now. The sills are really good, the passangers side boot well is shot due to resting in the mud when outside, but should be fixable. i am lead to believe that it was a really nice car before the engine blew a head gasket, and the head was removed, and the car left outside, the condition currently seems to point to that.... its rough, but could be worse
