Finnies would have to be one of the most ludicrously undervalued classics out there. They were a high-production car because they were (and still are) a great car. They're less rare than say some of your run of the mill Aussie or American cars because they were built better and to last.

I've noticed in recent years that the market value is slowly (but steadily) increasing for a good one. I believe that when all the slow to catch on suddenly notice finnies for what they are (great classic cars) there will be a scramble to pick up the remaining ones and the prices will increase substantially.

I don't care though, I won't be selling mine.

Your car is stunning by the way Brad! Nice to see another front bench seat car getting around in Oz. :D
Did you do all the paint and panel work on her yourself?

The arm was out the window because i had been sitting there for 10 minutes waiting to go, and it was stinking hot and had just been raining so it was extreemly muggy.
I hadn't realised how big the finny is or how small an S class is until i saw that photo. Was worried about getting stuck going through the dipper!
Full respect to the guys who raced them in the day.

I can't lay claim to the panel work. It was repainted in 1987. The car had been really well looked after and didn't need much work, there were very few dents, and only a little bit of rust in the front .
Motor was rebuilt at the same time.

Ahhh the Pug, my arch rival.
Just a little friendly rivalry between myself and Wayne (the owner) And his Peugeot and my Renault 750. He gets a little bit jelous of all the attention it recieved at a show once. And the fact the little Renault out performs it.
Just a little bit of fun.
If you cant enjoy yourself and have a bit of fun whats the point?

A PAIR! Any idea how many there were in Australia to start with? There surely can't be many left. Nice job finding TWO! :D

Well, I have been trying to chase that very question up for a while now. I have seen figures as low as 14 RHD 300SE LWB cars out of 1546 built, but in the majority of cases for Benz production, RHD is more like 10% of total build, rather than 1%!

As far as cars in Australia go, I know of one in NSW, with rumours of a second one, a car in Brisbane heading towards the end of restoration, and my two. There was also one for a number of years stored outside at Rupanyup in Vic, but it had disappeared by October 2007, and rumour has it that it may have headed O/S. But that's just rumour, with no concrete proof.

My two were delivered to Vic (Black with red interior), and SA (Dark red-brown with cream leather, Behr A/C and Becker Grand-Prix with Reims adaptor and Hirschmann electric antenna). I have been planning to chase up Australian Delivery info through M-B Australia for a while, so I might have to make some more effort on that front...

And here's a couple more photos of my Finnies.

Yes I saw that green lady under wraps at Sleeping Beauties a week ago. Judging by the level of work I saw on some of their other vehicles (amazingly space-age two-tone Citroen SM, INCREDIBLE 1938? Bugatti etc...) she's going to be a sight to behold. :D

Hi all, here are some recent pics of Murk.

Image

She's a 1965 220S, auto, English red. I bought her a few months ago in Melbourne and drove it home to Adelaide that day, Ive spent a lot of time with small touches like polishing the chrome, restoring the window surround wood work (I'm yet to tackle the dash facia). Ive tinted the windows, added a stainless steel fibre glass packed freeflow muffler (probably not to everyone's taste, but I love a loud exhaust, and the note of the mercedes under load is beautiful) I had the rear end converted to w108, with disk brakes and a more highway friendly diff. I've also got a set of 14 inch wheels and dress trims (professionaly polished, then colour match painted). I added a tacho initially out of curiosity to see at what RPM it idled etc and as an aide in tuning, but Ive gotten used to being able to see the revs, and it will stay, so ive housed it in a chrome guage pod and it looks quite nice on the dash. Last week I decided the oil-bath air filter had to go, so ive replaced it with two carb-top filters which do the trick.
There have been and will be many other small mods but I've kept all original parts so it can be converted back to stock easily, and wouldn't dream of drilling or cutting into the original steel, so everything must be bolt on. The driving lights are lucas flame throwers, a relic thats been in my old mans shed my whole life, and he wasn't too eager to part with, but I just wasnt happy with the look of the original bug catcher grills, and I think these really tidy up the front end nicely. At the moment they are just mounted (using the original grill bolt holes, and some home fabricated brackets) and not yet connected.
I have so many plans for the future, but no idea whats next, throwing money at cars seems to be a hobby of mine so we'll see what takes my fancy next time a wad of the folding stuff comes my way! A Weber conversion perhaps? Braided hoses for the engine bay? Or much needed weather seals?

Wow. English Red on a W111. Interesting. I love it on 123s, but had never seriously thought about it on my 108 which obviously shares the family resemblance to the finny and will hopefully get a paint job in the next decade or two.

Can I be rude and ask how in-depth the paint job was and how many clams it set you back?

Thanks

The paint job was roughly 2 years old when I bought her, and the previous owner told me it was a bare metal respray. Its a pretty good job and has held up well, but the engine bay was not done, all door jambs and other things were done tho. No idea what it cost, it would be interesting to find out tho.

I love this site. Very organized and great details about finnie :)

This 1964 220SE was purchased in US and the owner went to Germany and picked up from the factory. She drove it for 6 months in Europe as vacation and shipped back to California. That was her main vehicle until she was 92 yrs old. She passed away a few yrs later and gave it to her granddaughter in Canada. They shipped it to Canada, her granddaughter fixed up the transmission, replace a new engine head and repaint the vehicle. Then she put this vehicle in the garage for the next 15 years.

Last month, I got a chance to purchase this 1964 220SE. It has all the original documents since 1964, including the purchasing invoice. The engine starts right away and it has 160,000miles on it. There is no accident on this car. I love it so much.

I don't know much about car. I am planning to spend some time to get to know this car :)

Some issues with the car:
1) the night light didn't seem to work, the fuse is okay, I don't really know where is the problem. The switch?
2) When I tested the car, the radiator is running and engine oil is moving. After taking 2 days on a trailer and transfer though the Rocky Mountains, the radiator fluid seems to be not moving and the engine oil seems to be not pump up to the top. I found this is very strange and I am afraid of turning the engine on.

My plan in the near future:
1) replace for the all fluids.
2) replace some hoses
3) grease!

Do you guys know where I can find some parts such as hoses, oil filter, etc. in North America?

Welcome pkjli,
Nice car by the way. For parts, I would recommend you see the Autohaus AZ website (do a google search). They have prices online so you can get an idea of the costs you may be up for. I would also recommend you try to get in touch with your local Mercedes Benz club, as there may be some people there with really good local knowledge about parts and mechanics.
As for the night light, the one near the interior mirror turns on and off by trucking its lever forward and backward. It should come on with the door open and the light exposed. If you flick the chrome lever closed so that the light is not visible anymore, it should turn off. The one in the back is operated by a switch on the dash. You may need to pop the cover off the light to see if power is getting to it.
I don't know about your oil and coolant - how can you tell if the radiator coolant is moving and the oil is pumping? Did you run the engine with the rocker cover off?
Cheers, Drew

I know several of you have been waiting for these, and it's been over a year since I've purchased it, but I've finally brought the Finnie up to condition that I consider worthy of a post in 'star shots'! The big motivator behind finally bringing it all together was so that the car could be used as a wedding car (see viewtopic.php?f=25&t=10767).

Here it is - my 1967 230S - Horizonblau with Navy MB-Tex interior. Column shift Auto & power steering. Still on original 13 inch rims but with sumitomo SC890 whitewalls.
Image

Spotlights were fitted before I bought the car, but are staying as I prefer them to stone guards. Reproduction german style number plates are from http://www.licenseplates.tv/germany-eur ... -2049.html
Image

Newly rechromed rear bumper looks the biz! Very pricey but I can't fault the results! Shame about the drivers side tail light - metal is pitted and the lenses are bad but I'm keeping my eye out for a replacement.
Image

Sides have been resprayed since I've bought the car, but bonnet, roof and bootlid are the original paint.
Image

Will post some interior shots soon! Engine bay shots also to come once it is tidied up under there and my twin weber carbies are installed!

Cheers guys, very proud of the result (took a LOT of cleaning and polishing!) - when I took the photos it was very overcast and getting dark so the colour appears a lot paler and more grey-ish than it actually is - will try and upload a better shot next time we have some sunshine.

As for the bumpers, only the rears have been rechromed and that cost me $1500 :confused2: - a bit of a shock - although I cannot fault the work at all - they are mirror smooth and the lustre of the chrome is amazing. From what I gather, the panelbeater sent them off to a group called everlast here in SA who then sent them off to some place in Victoria (don't know who) - so after two seperate companies and then the panelbeater added on their margin, plus freight it's no wonder it came to that amount. I'm sure that if you asked around you would be able to find someone locally who could do just as good a job for under a grand - even less if your bumpers are reasonably straight to begin with (mine weren't!) - and get a quote first! (I didn't :silent: )

I thought it would come up nice with a bit of a tidy up.

I bumped into another fellow in Ballarat who had just bought a very nice white 220SE from Adelaide.
I promised to take my finnie aroud to show him before christmas.

thanks for your comments Mick
It took us a while to decide on this finnie
after a price drop we went for it
it seems to be a well serviced car even if the PO clearly embellished its history
a reseal of the steering box, centre tailshaft bearing and a little rust removal saw it through the RWC
tho the original plates stayed with the PO
the plastic is still on the back seat upright and L/H front door trim
I removed it from the R/H front door when i repaired the door stay
there seems to be the remnants of a white powder in the front door pocket !!
smells like a pharmacy probably some antacid !!

now finnie is doing the school run daily and occasional trips to Daylesford etc
there is a list of things to do but overall we love this car

a Ballarat showing / get together of these classic cars would be great fun

Thought I'll post a couple of new photos from a show on the weekend where he met another 220S and fell in love with a lovely little red 190SL

Khumo 185/80x13. $480 for the set.
On the road, all seems really good. They are quiet, handles well. Can't say I noticed much of a difference. The tyre I did have were good, just really old. Had one nearly blow. So changed them for safety sake.
Biggest difference came from being the correct size. They fill the guards better than the 185/70x13 that were on it. Speedo is closer to correct (still a bit out - 60mph is about 1/3 of the way up the tip of the speed bar - above the wide part - below the point - if that makes sence?) it's not screaming as much at 60mph and fuel economy improved, after 340 miles on the weekend it averaged just over 10L/100km. Which included some higher speeds (all legal maybe, nowhere on speed signs does it say km/h or mph :evil2: )

Very nice, esp. with the original plates...brings back memories of the 1970's and a lucky friend with parents who owned one in the same colour !!! :glasses2:

Nice! No doubt the name "Eugen" is in tribute to the Factory works driver Eugen Bohringer, who had so much Rally success in the early 60's driving the 220SE? How do you clean all that mud off!?

As promised heres a few shots of my new finny after a good clean and polish, its not perfect but damn its gorgeous.

Its a '65 SEb and the only mods are airbag suspension, 14" wheels and air-con fitted (doesn't work). Can't wait to get it regged and on the road.

That's ace! Amazing the difference that a few minor changes make too, last time I saw this car it had tombstone lights and mags. Drew must be pleased that she's getting the attention and care she deserves! :notworthy:

This is my '67 230S Rally Car. One owner until 1999 and then just one clown and me. The clown really abused it and it took some time to get it back into 100% Mercedes Benz. But he's fine now with Koni shocks, Weber Carbs (okay, not 100% M-B) and rally equipment.

Here are some pics of the Finnie that I've just purchased off Fleabay, as a project.

Do't know what to do about the aftermarket sunroof - I'll have to give that some thought.

It's currently on it's way from Melbourne, hope to get it this week.

It's a 1964 220sb, manual - Australian built, with minimal rust (haha - I hope).

Kins Regards

Bill
