Star Shots! - Show us your Ride

Post by AMG » Mon 05 Mar, 2007 10:49 am

Post Pictures of your car here!

Don't forget to include details such as year, colour etc.
If your car has a story, for example; how you came across it, - put it in here with the pictures. It's always nice to read someone else's experiences.

If you've done any modifications / improvments, Here's the place to show them off - Post lots of pics!

It's not a bad idea to revisit your post every now and then, to make sure your pictures are still up. We'd also like to encourage those who do post a Project car, and supply us with updates, to come back to your original post and edit it, rather than make a new post each time, by replying. It will help keep all your pictures and progress in one spot!

It also makes your post MUCH easier to view.

If you're unsure on how to upload pictures, go to the posting tutorial on the main board and try the test posting page, Don't forget to sign yourself up for a free account on imageshack / photobucket etc.. if you haven't already.

Show us ya Pics! :)

Here's some photos of my recenty acquired finny. She's a 1960 220Sb manual

I owned it 17 years ago when I was only 20. When I purchased it it had a grey interior but I installed a red interior from a wreck I purchased.

I then sold it to a mate, who sold it to my Dad who subsequently sold it to a chap that owned it for about 10 years. 3 years ago my dad stumbled across an advert for it in the trading post and bought it back.

6 months ago he gave it to me as he had no where to store it. :D

I have a Subaru Vortex as my daily driver and the Merc is purely a weekend cruiser. I am hoping to lower it and currently chasing the following parts

- Interior Rear Venetian Blind
- Sun Visor
- Front Mesh Protectors (sit either side of the front grille)
- 1 x Round Cover Insert for Interior Quarter Vent Control
- 4 x Plastic Inserts for Interior Door Opener

Drews V8 finny

Post by drew56cus » Mon 12 Mar, 2007 2:20 pm

Ok, time to compile some of my pics.
Got the car as an unloved, unwanted rolling shell that had passed from wrecker to people in the MB club, each taking some pieces off him. Then in a moment of masochism I decided to take on a 'quick' project!
Here he is at first.
Image
The 4.5MB V8 mocked up
Image
And now getting smoothed out (a long & tedious process)
Image
Will hopefully paint over Easter 2007.
OBVIOSULY MY DEADLINE HAS LONG PAST AND HE IS STILL NOT DONE. But here he is at the moment.
Image
And my coupe project. (Hopefully Easter 2008).

1965 W111 220Sb auto

Post by OzBenzHead » Mon 12 Mar, 2007 11:30 pm

1965 W111 220Sb auto

Acquired in 2005 from original owner's family (life-long locals) for a ridiculously small $um.

He has somewhere in the region of 140+000 miles on the clock and was maintained by the same mechanical shop all his life (not the local stealership whence he was bought).

He came with original owner's manual and both data cards.

I put a full rebuild kit through the twin dual-choke Zeniths, fitted a new battery, and when the five months' rego expired I put him on Club plates.

He loves a good tour around the serpentine local back roads at least as much as he enjoys a highway cruise. Being light (relatively!), and having unassisted steering, he feels as though he wants to rally, Dakkar style!

Because of those big Zeniths and low final-drive gearing, he is a far thirstier drinker than any of my larger, heavier, injected Benzes - but, as he is a special-occasion driver (the story of his entire life!), that hardly bothers me.

He's not bodily or aesthetically perfect, but he still attracts much admiration.

I call him Hektor the Heckflosse.

1965 W112 300SE auto coupé

Post by OzBenzHead » Mon 12 Mar, 2007 11:46 pm

1965 W112 300SE auto coupé

Acquired in 2004 from a short-term Melbourne-based owner; prior to that, the long-term PO was an elderly gent somewhere down Canberra way. The car passed through John Green's hands sometime between the elderly gent and the bloke I bought it from.

Apart from one 10-cent sized hole in the LH side boot-well floor, he appears - to all inspections - to be otherwise completely rust-free (perhaps owing to his mostly inland-climate life).

Just before I acquired him, he had all the suspension airbags replaced, thus saving me a considerable expense.

Because there was a loud, high-pitched song from the diff - but only when under power (silent when foot lifted off accelerator), I am in the process of replacing the entire rear LSD axle with a good one - and a higher-geared final drive at the same time (original is 3.92:1 / replacement is 3.75:1).

I forget what the odometer reads, and the car's not nearby for me to check. (Most of my storage is a few km from home.) It is not, however, anywhere near high for a Benz - perhaps in the 140,000 km zone.

Although I may be biased, I'm inclined to agree with the many who claim this coupé is, stylistically, one of the more desirable post-WWII Benzes.

I call him Bela Benz, after Bela Barenyi, inventor of the occupant safety cell - and a few thousand other M-B (and other makes) safety concepts / devices.

Thanks, Joe.

Another two weeks and he should be rolling again; rebuilt replacement axle arrived this week (from JG) and will be fitted late next week or soon after. I'm looking forward to a drive - after two years of his being rear-wheel-less.

This is my 1965 300SE Coupé. I bought it in France in 2005 after meeting an old collector who said he had one to sell. I did a train trip from London to Limoges and decided to throw caution to the wind and buy it. I have spent a lot on it but you can't see where the money went except in the nice woodwork and sorting out the horrid yellow French headlights. It needs new leather seats and sorting out a period radio. I have to have a new fuel tank in it as the existing one is crumbling from the inside. So I am getting a newly made one from the M-B factory.

I am bringing it to Oz in a couple of months. I am selling up here to come and live somewhere with space. Lots of space. Bringing the car makes no sense except that I like it and can't bring myself to sell it.

The photo is taken in a town called Eu, in France, outside the Hotel du Maine. I did a trip in August this year with my nephew from Canberra and his mates. We took the Shuttle through the Tunnel. The second photo is inside the shuttle train travelling underneath the English Channel.

hey everybody this is my 1967 230s, know around town as"finny" i got this car from a private sale about 2 yrs ago now. the only thing that has gone worng with the car is that about 4 months after we got it the differential blew up while driving .not the funnest thing to happen . but other than that the car has ran like a dream being a daily driver and never missing a beat. when i got the car there was thing odd smell like vomit coming from somewhere in the interior so i just ripped everything out and gave it a good clean and re-carpeted the floor and transmission tunnel while doing so i also decided to try abit of upholstering and i re-trimmed certain interior pieces in a grey vynil over al it didnt turn out too bad freshening the car up and most importantly getting rid of the vomit smell. over all the car is in a very good shape and i love getting comments from people while driving . i once had a guy get out of his car at a set of traffic light just to ask about it, people giving me the thumbs up and the other day a guy waiting outside my work to see if i was ever going to sell it. i dont think i will ever be able to sell my finny

uh i took a cheaper option out rather than origional and just baught some auto carpet for about $20 per square meter roughly(i think). And used the floor mats and old pieces as templates. It got the job dona and it still looks good. i wasnt even gonna try and go to my local mercedes stealership as they tried to charge me $400 for a jack

Sydney,

Looks like a super cool Finnie, love the colour if it wasn't such a big job to change it I would go for the light blue. However since I've started cutting back the paint on Shrek, the Moss green (if that's what it is) has really grown on me and is staying now!

I noted the comments on POR15 though and will be investigating further when I tackle the bodged repairs on the top of the front guard and driver's door.

Some lovely looking finnies are coming to the group! Hey Sydney, that is the original colour scheme of my FrankenBenz!
And aegean, I love the greys... if your car is original and has front drums, it is a '62. If front discs, it is post mid-63.
Hopefully I can add some pics of a registered finnie of my own on these pages soon. Thanks for the inspiration.

I think the wing mirrors were placed as yours are until 1963 then they were moved back to the quarter light window area on the doors so It could be a 62 model.

EDIT
I think I should have said DOOR not doors cos I think the later models had only 1 mirror

Hi all,

I'm the owner of a W112 300se coupe, which I bought off another Forum member "Pauld" back in 2002. Otto (as he's known) is a great car that I'm totally in love with. He's still a work in progress, but I'm enjoying the journey a lot. - Franc

Well Im finally here !
I've been lurking for a while, and loving all the info. I finally found my Finnie through a good mate...he says,"I've heard about a good restorer". It turns out to be a complete untouched car.....with NO rust.....you see, this older guy in Mornington used to Manage a Benz stealership (Star sumthing or other ???) and saved THIS Finny to resto himself......and he's got too many projects, so he'll give it to me for a parts car price. My mate goes to have a look and there's a catch......for the same price, I MUST take the 'parts car' too. As soon as I figure how to post some pix, I'll show you what I got. I'm stoked!!! :D

Here's the latest addition to our family. This is Lucy, a 1965 220S, bought for $1,025 a month or so ago from a family that had her since 1989. She needs a bit of tlc, but is responding well. She needs a touch of the welding torch on the boot floor and a sympathetic panel beater to smooth out a few knocks and scrapes

Look at those bumpers! she's a bit tatty, but she will scrub up.

I've also included my beloved W123 Coupe that we have owned for 6 years. In desperate need of a respray, she has only done 76,000 miles. Unfortunately the original owner passed away and her husband couldn't bear to let the car go, so he left it in the driveway for 10 years; hence the bad paintwork. I originally bought her in the UK, toured in the UK and France and we have shared some fantastic adventures:

That's the one - Fleabay it was.

When I looked at it, it looked as though someone had died in it and the last time it was washed was when Gough Whitlam was still in power, but it started, stopped and looked fairly solid and for the price, I couldn't let it get away.......

That said, it looks a bit tatty and has had a few knocks, the boot floor needs a touch of the magic welder, the front jacking points have weakened and risen into the sill (I had this happen on a MkII Jag years ago) and will also need sorting, a small crease on the offside rear and a bump to take out in the back panel and that's it.

The bumpers need a sympathetic panel beater and re-chroming - this will happen more in the long term.

The steering is loose and I suspect the steering box...so I have a few $$$$'s I'll need to spend, but I'm in no great rush and am enjoying the challenge of doing it slowly and spending the time to find the spares

I own a 67 250SE with a rather interesting history. I'm living in Detroit, MI for a few years, and was browsing craigslist I think while stuck in an airport. I noticed there was a 250SE for sale, and from the pictures it was a two door. As you can imagine, detroit is not the number one place to look if you want a benz, and most cars of that era have rusted away anyway (even my shoes disintergrate with all the salt they use here). They were asking $6500 and the car was listed with 'no rust', which while from the pictures was obviously false it looked pretty solid. The car really interested me as it has some options that i've not normally seen on the 250 coupe like 15" wheels, headrests, power antenna etc. Expecting it to be in terrible condition, but interested nevertheless, I drove out to Grand rapids and looked at the car.

It had originally been purchased in 1967 by a colonel in the airforce who flew the B-52 (makes me think of Dr Strangelove) and this guy owned the car until 1994, putting around 200,000 miles on it. During that time he had fitted a 280 engine, and other 'upgrades' to make it look more like a 280 (shift lever, tail lights, later tape deck etc). It then passed through a couple of 'tinkerers' until this guy got it, I think for an unpaid debt. He had owned it for around 8 years and never registered it, but had driven it around his property etc.

Based on that condition, I made him a pretty low offer and surprisingly he accepted. The first challenge was to get the car back to Detroit. The towing package that i purchased with my classic insurance covered around 90miles from home, so it needed to run for at least 70 before i could get a free tow :-). Apart from running out of fuel, and stuttering a few times it made it back the 2.5 hour drive (staying 55 mph in the slow lane as the tyres were from 1980).

Since then, i've put on new tyres (although i think they are too wide for the rims, but they were all i could find). and found out why it runs out of fuel and used to cut out. The 'flower pot' in the fuel tank was all gunked up, so I had to drop the fuel tank and give it a good clean. Next job is the brake booster as I have no power brakes (but I did buy a used one from a 108 on evilbay). The car is surprisingly solid underneath, rust is around the headlights and in the boot.

Shame its not RHD as i'll probably end up selling it when i leave DTW although its tempting to remove the headrests and 15" wheels for the next coupe I get back in oz.

Hey all, this is my second W111, the first being a 220S incorrectly registered as a '67 (never found out what year it actually was) which unfortunately was left on the street so long by the guy I sold it to that the council towed it and sold it at auction on him (hope it went to someone who did something with it!). It was a Moss Green Aus-built manual with a hole in the boot the size of Queensland and a Kuhlmeister A/C unit I wish I'd kept.

My current W111 is a 'Special Import Version' '62 220SE. She's an automatic and has red-brown MB Tex in a rare stitch pattern, a rare front bench seat option and cloth roof liner. The colour is DB166 'Blue Grey' on the plate (which is a special order colour). I obtained my original Data Card from the factory in Germany and they described the colour as 'Violet Grey'.

She's needed some light bodywork (rust in rear-quarter and pushed-in dent on driver's door) but other than that she was in very straight shape. This and the EXTENSIVE mechanical work has been completed out by the capable hands of Ron (Mercmad) in Moorooka. Highly recommended. The rear-quarters are as good as new now (welded, not bogged) and the dent in the door simply popped back out. Nice and straight again!

I would also like to thank Drew on here (drew56cus) for generously helping me out with parts I needed. Cheers mate!

I'll eventually be posting a list of everything mechanical that's been done to the car to get it ready to parade her vintage finery on the streets once more. With this info I will include a list of all the parts I've had to source and where I've found them for the best price at the best quality, whether Adelaide or Argentina, Fairfield or Florida. If any of this subsequent information can be helpful to others to get or keep another old girl on the road, then I would be more than happy to share specific contact details for distributors and the price I paid at the time via PM.

On my eventual wish-list is:

Paint job in DB304 'Horizon Blue' with DB335 'Blue' roof. Image

Electric sunroof (transplanted from another Merc)

Whitewalls - fitted 185/70/R13 Kuhmo's.

Stereo system with original Becker running a hidden ipod in the glovebox - obtained rare Becker Grand Prix with 108 band from '69-'70 280SE coupe.

Side mirror/s - placed in forward position (correct for year model).

300SE side chrome-strips (if I'm ever lucky enough to find some OEM)

New vinyl dash top

New horn pad - found a lovely original white one, will look beautiful with the white steering wheel

A few strips of brown MB Tex to fix small sections of the bench seat, if not a completely re-trimmed interior (apart from door cards which are immaculate)

New carpeting, though existing is quite excellent - the section over the trans tunnel for instance looks new

The '65Finnnz' 'Beige Beastie' stage one 'as is' I'll keep posting update pics as the project moves along. The more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards doing the paintwork in white. White? you may ask? I don't know if the did candy, pearl or metallics in '65. My original thoughts were black, black and more black but I reckon it would be a sweet ride in a mezmerising white with modern paint effects, big whitewalls with rims in candy red under the chrome to match the interior? Dropped pie? Push it in dough to make gorilla biscuits? The paint quandry continues. Time is ticking ladies and gentlemen, body work and paint booked in for October.......

Yes I was watching that 230S as well, agreed he either sold it privately or had a change of heart and decided to restore it himself. Most likely the former.

Your car looks good Timmo, love those front deflectors - wish I could find some!

So many red interior finnies on here now, it's a bloodbath! :P

And she's pretty tidy too. Love what you've done with that interior, came up a treat. Any more thoughts on whether you're going to leave the hubcaps and rings off or customize the caps? She'll look good either way I reckon.

Thanks so much for helping me with those parts too mate! Absolute champion. :D

I've been around for a while, off and on, but hadn't really got around to putting up some photos of 'the collection', well, the Finnie bit at least!

First up is our 1964 220SE which was our first Benz, purchased in June 05. After doing sterling work as my wife's daily driver for 18 months, we moved on to other cars to battle the traffic, and since then the Finnie has been used as a second car, club run car, occasional concours entrant and weekend cruiser as required! She had 95 000 miles on the clock when we purchased it, and is up to about 130 000 now. Apart from a minor altercation with another vehicle while in Tassie on our honeymoon, there have been no dramas, and the car has kicked off a minor affair with M-B products in the household!

Next up came a pair of 1964 300SE LWBs. Both Aust delivered, and eventually the red one will be fully restored. As for the black one, well, there should be most of the bits left to do the job, so it might move on once I sort things out in the shed to make some workspace!

Here is my beautiful 1984 230E

I acquired her from a car dealer, her body has always been in great condition but the engine was left to fight for itself, she died after a few months of acquiring her. I had fallen madly in-love with her by this time so there was no second though about putting in a second hand new engine, and so I did she has just gone over 200,000kms runs like a dream! Turns heads where ever she goes, shes the best car I have ever had I bought her for around $3500 Australian dollars, I have added a few extra's to the vehicle like tinting, chrome wheels, sports exhaust and racing leads, neons, sub woofer and speakers.

I intend to keep her for the rest of my life.

You have, but for W110, W111 and W112's... all built in the sixties. Your car is a W123, built in the eighties.

Have a look at the main page - there is a section for each chassis code/ respective model and within that there is an individual Star Shots aka "Show us your ride" thread to post your pictures in.

No need for the smug attitude mate. Hope the above info helps and that you find people in the W123 section who like the look of your car. Bling wheels and blue LEDs etc aside it looks like a very tidy example. Love the colour.

These are a couple of the hundred or so photos taken by Ray Bell for a planned artical about Finnys and also highlighting young classic car enthusiests for Australian classic cars. But obviously Finnys aren't interesting enough, or not Aussie, V8, American or valuable enough to be featured.

Brad: Thanks for the great pics of your beautiful 220Sb -- gorgeous! 8)

Also, I note that it has the front bench seat and is a manual. Not a very common combination in Oz, surely?

Also, the other good car in those shots is the 404 Pug ute!
