Weather-strip/seal for the rear tail light

I’m about to change the weather-strip/seal for the RH rear tail light. The old one was glued to the lens/chrome frame. Is the seal supposed to be glued on? It’s a w111, limousine.

I've never seen any of the rubber seals not 'glued' (by that I mean stuck to it in some way) to the lens shells, but over time it's understandable. My guess is that if it wasn't glued from the factory, then a lot of people sure have done it themselves to keep water out of the lens assembly and the boot.

For peace of mind I'd personally seal it with something - be it mastic or a glue sealant - whatever keeps out moisture.

But to be specific - I've never seen a finnie tailight housing which hasn't been removed and replaced on the vehicle several times - these cars were made before I was born, so I can't comment on what a perfect original vehicle example should have.

I cannot see any harm in using a flexible sealant or waterproof mastic/grease to keep the moisture away. I think it's mandatory in nearly every Mercedes - they all leak like sieves around the tailight lenses after 20 years.

You can buy some neoprene sponge rubber that can be cut to size (Clark Rubber etc.)

Stick that to the taillight assemblies and it should work fine.

Go and lie in the boot (lid closed) with someone with a spotlight shining around the lights to see some leaks.
Finnie boots are very roomy, you can have dinner with wine and a cheese platter in there...

Thanks for the feedback. Flexible sealant has been obtained and will be used to “glue” the seal to the lens-shell. Yes, Bart – I’ve had several “parties” in the boot to identify leakages. There were several, and the one left is from the “hinge-well”. No, it’s not the drain holes – they do as they are supposed to do. I suspect the rubber seal for the nut toward the body. Does that sound reasonable? – they seem to be quite hard and may not seal properly. I’ll check a bit more, though.
