W112 re-do upholstery

Post by David B » Mon 30 Oct, 2017 1:11 pm

The leather interior on my W112 Coupe has self-destructed quite spectacularly. I'm looking at how much it will cost to get it remade. I'm told there is an auto upholstery place in Fyshwick that knows Mercedes. I've tried finding it online but there are several and no clue to which one it is. I'm on the mid north coast so would also consider Brisbane. Ideally I like to do it bit by bit; i.e.. seats first. I'm expecting people will not be keen to do it that way. There is KHM in Germany who will sell the kits. A front seat alone is 637 Euros. Any recommendations out there?

There's nothing more expensive than a Mercedes re-upholstery.

The best work I've seen is done by John at Car interiors plus in Atarmon - concours winning stuff - but he's not cheap and the 630-odd euro from KHM is only for the seat cover, so understand - it doesn't include the pads, redoing the frames and all the other jobs that need attending to, to make the job done properly. Even if you DIY you are in for an eye-bleeding experience, but the car is worth every penny when it's done properly and it will add tremendous value.

Last cabriolet job I saw done was over $20K to do to perfection, and that was about 8 or 9 years ago. They are simply a complicated and very time consuming task to do and do properly. When you see it done 'half-arsed' it really looks shabby and poor.

the forum sponsor is in Fyshwick. Perhaps that is what you were trying to find?. 1800 737 300 ask for John Green.

Best thing for my mind is to shop for some prices, and be sure that you're getting the genuine article. because there are a lof of ways to cut corners on an interior, and it shows in the results.

Hi,
take aside serious money or consider restoring it. The problem with W111/112 is, that there's no plastic, so everything's leather. I knew someone here, who could source ALL the leather in top quality for a good price and just the leather without any work was around 10,000 Euros. So if you're just interested in the seats, KHM is a good source; they have a pretty good reputation here.

Regards
Thomas

Thanks for the replies. And yes, I know John our esteemed forum sponsor. My Merc has had two major breakdowns in Canberra and he has sorted them out. I once transported the car 800 kms there when the gearbox failed as well.

I'm just trying to get a ball park figure as I will have to attend to it at some stage.

I spoke to someone locally who spent $20K on the interior of an Armstrong Siddley, and that looked simple compared to the stitching on the MB with pleats etc. No upholsterers here will touch my car. I've seen the leather on a 190SL redone locally and it was bastardised. A lot of the upholsterers here do mostly boats.

An option is buying the leather from Germany and getting someone in Oz to fit it.

The big prblem with all the kits and leather is that it is basically faeces. all matt or satin finish and very thin with the wrong grain and finish. Look on facebook for Jonathan Firth https://www.facebook.com/jonathan.firth ... tion=group He has just sourced the correct leather and has a guy to do his upholstery in ....Bulgaria. Check with him, but I think he bought it from Connolly's in the UK. Believe me, you Do not want the leather on the market right now, it's like a 1990's holden commodore look.

Hi David, you need to figure out how much you want to throw at this. As Ron said, if you want the absolute correct grain and dye method, you will have to get hides and get someone to make them all up - eye-wateringly expensive. If you can live with the right patterns stitched in but modern dyeing methods then there are a range of vendors that do them, from dear to expensive.
What colour is your interior?
Cheers, Drew
PS - I haven't been surfing at Hungry Head for donkeys years, but I have good memories of that place, and Hat Head. Beautiful.

The leather is red. Probably a bright red when new.

The correct colour will be listed on your cars data card. If you haven't got that you can order a copy through your local Mercedes dealer or the forum sponsor (who will not try and gouge you on the price)

I'm guessing it would be Roser Red - which has a completely different dyeing process to just about all the other tanned hides out there. There are a couple of places that still do this process, but oh boy.... talk about taking a hit in the ghoulies....

http://www.aro2000.com/leather_for_mercedes.htm

check it out. might help you find your colour code for the hide.

Hi David,
I bought 2 interior seat cover kits made by German Auto Tops from an trimmer whose customer had disappeared, to put into my coupes. One is a bright red, which will not go with my intended colour scheme. I can take some pics and dig up what they cost me on the weekend if you are interested.
Cheers, Drew

Hi Drew and all,
Thanks for the replies. I'd be interested to see photos, Drew, of what you have. Sorry about the delay in getting back to you.

Hi David, if you are on Facebook look up this group and then look up a guy called Rod Barrett. He had his coupe done by Car Interior Plus and whilst the dollars were substantial, the result is very satisfying.
