I am going to disagree with you, not about your dream, since even in North Korea your dreams are your own, but about the desirability of this car. To me it looks all wrong. The side view makes it look like they have got an ordinary W108/09 and stuck an appendage to the boot (which I suppose is what they did). I'm pretty sure Paul Bracq would not have done this - he would have made subtle changes to the whole car so it looked beautiful rather than odd.

I'm with David on this one. I'll go so far as to say that looks so bad that it looks more like a photoshop job. Could they have got all those lines at the rear so wrong in real life?

At the risk of offending Crayford wagon owners, compare photos of any Crayford wagon with photos of a 123 or 124 wagon. It is immediately obvious which ones were designed to be wagons rather than sedans converted to wagons. Then compare the practical features of the Crayford versus the factory wagons. I know it's an unfair comparison but the factory wagons easily win.

I like having Mercs that are a bit different to the "run of the mill" models but when it comes to a practical and attractive wagon, I'm happy to go with a regular 300TE.

I think the part I will admit is not right, is the choice of side rear window frames...they look very non-Bracq.

However I do like the tailgate treatment, which still has the profile or 'bump' of the original boot lid retained (very similar to 108 Hearses seen in Australia) and whilst the styling of the roof addition is evident, it's much better than some Estate conversions done in period !

I agree that the tailgate treatment is OK (if a little impractical with an opening that does not extend to the cargo floor like on an S123 or S124) but the roof line isn't great and the side rear windows are very wrong. Something that sets a factory designed wagon apart from some conversions (such as the Crayfords) is the C and D pillar treatment and rear doors. On a W108 or W116 sedan converted to a wagon they just don't work as well as the rear doors that were unique to the S123 and S124.

The W110 and W111 Universals on the other hand do look right. Notice how the rear doors on the W110 and W111 have a quarter glass and window frame that fits well with the wagon's shape in much the same way as the rear doors unique to the 123 and 124 wagons. The side rear windows on the W110 and W111 Universals also look right and they differ from the W108 and W116 Crayfords in that they don't look like a sedan converted to a wagon.

As promised here are some pics of my Universal project. It's a 1966 230s and has 78k on the clock with 2 owners from new. Clearly it'll take some time but I hope eventually that it will look something like the first picture- it was originally graphite grey. I'll keep you all posted!

That's very impressive! I've seen the pics of your red universal rebuild which I found hugely inspiring, not least the addition of the sunroof (I thought it was amazing that you removed the entire roof). My universal's roof is the worst part, it's very badly rusted along the gutter edge and will need much work- If only I could weld well and had your expertise!

Anyone familiar with the 230S Universal in Australia (West A?) that has a Norwegian past? Last seen with the registration MK-111, previously with 230BE and FRITZ66. I would love writing up a story on it for our national M-Bz club and need to get some good pictures and maybe details on its history. Apparently it was brought to Australia by a Norwegian shipping company employee when almost new.

cheers,

Narve in Norway

Would he be on this Forum or does anyone out there know him? I might return a favour with some details on the car's Norwegian past and possibly on the first ownership.

That´s true, but how many -65 190D do you see ? Only 160 was made and all of them was sold here in Sweden.
Do I need to say that mine is a -65.

I think it´s a common problem.
On my first Universal I cut the rusty part and replaced it with a gutter edge from a Sedan.

I have done some progress with the Binz.
Some moore months and it will be a car again :happy3:
The color is mixed as when the car was new.
Binz colorcode is primer, forget but it´s 067 or 027.
Anyway, this is how she looks like now.

Well the work goes on and now it´s time for the paintjob.
I don´t know, but it seems to me that nobody here is interested about an old Binz.
Is it my bad english or is it just that this kind of car is boring?

I can't speak for others, but I sit hear and study in silence! Very nice work. Nothing wrong with your English either.
What type of welding have you been doing and how have you controlled distortion?
Is the car going to be that nice green colour, or is that the primer?
What about that tilting thing you have the car on - when it is rusty, does using it risk twisting or distorting the body? Do you weld bracing in so that everything remains straight and lined up?
Cheers, Drew

I have not been here for a while, sorry for that. But anyway, thanks for your response.
I´m using an normal MIG for welding.
I´m absolutly not a good "welder" but I learn everyday
The "tilting thing" is great help when the car is rusty like this was, I´ve been working almost 400 hours only with the rust.
The green colour is the colour the car had when it was new.

About twisting or distorting the body. I think that there can be a risk, but so far everything looks good.
Ofcourse when I cut the roof on my Universal I stabilized the body.

Here´s some pictures, I´m doing this very much to inspire others to restore an oldie.
I like before and after photos :happy3:

It took some time, but I cheated, I took the front from another car.
I bought two Sedans for spareparts, the Sedans are very cheap here in Sweden.
But I payed a lot for the "Binzwreck", I think it´s the only one in Sweden and very few in the world.

Yes it was really an transplantation.
I´m very pleased with the colour, look so good.
The interior will be dark green, same as original.

Here´s a photo of how it looks like, looks a little bit blue, but it´s because of age and sun.
Right now the seats are in a workshop.
Soon I will go to Thailand to spend the winter there, when I come back home in April the interior will be ready.

Can't really see it in the picture, but make sure you have drain holes at the bottom of those banana shaped reinforcements that you replaced.
They are there in the original sheet metal, but often those bits have been replaced and the drains are forgotten...

Awesome job!

There's a pretty cool w201 scene in BKK. You should check it out.
If you're interested, get in touch with Ake, tell him that Joe said you should come and visit and check out the 16v scene. ( hedgehog Motorsport )

We have had an interesting development with tracing the history of our Binz. We have confirmed the original owner.

And that he signed the log book.

What a find! Great to have history like that!

The 'Reverend' owner seems to be a common story - our club founder, Rev. Clem Minge explained why he converted to MBs:
In July 1964 we moved to Queensland in an almost new EH Holden, and two months later while on a work project I saw a BEAUTIFUL LOOKING CAR in a shop window. Completing my task I returned and found a black 1957 220S. On examination it looked even MORE beautiful (I confess I knew nothing about the make or model), and the salesman said he would exchange it for the Holden (worth about $2000) plus seventy pounds (or $140). I fetched Joan, and we bought it! It took only a brief acquaintance with the car to realize we had a ‘quality’ product, with a free-revving motor and powerful brakes, and one that was as cheap to run as, and cheaper to maintain than, the Holden, besides having ‘comfort’ and ‘road-ability’. We had two glorious years with that car, till bad signs developed: work was needed. I followed everyone’s advice and went ‘modern’, and in fifteen months I went through two new cars and one secondhand one of three different makes, but found them unsatisfactory, with poor design and material, and full of annoying imperfections: a ‘pain’ to use and own by comparison with the Benz.

On December 19th 1967, after we had moved to Central Queensland with its huge distances, I bought my present 220S (84815 miles), it costing me about half the price of the current new Holden (about $2500). Satisfaction returned immediately: we could sit in it for more than half an hour without getting uncomfortable- (in it I drove non-stop-solo from Rockhampton to Melbourne- 1500 miles in 25 hours); it handled dirt roads without trauma- and the rough shoulders of Queensland’s narrow bitumen roads never threw it off line; with a full load it would cruise at 60 mph (100km/h) and return 30 mpg (9.3l/100) – on one long full-load trip I awoke to find my taxi-driver brother (who when he first saw the car said ‘What is it?’) cruising at 90 mph (150km/h) and when I looked at him he said ‘It is doing it nicely!’. It was the sort of car I was quite happy to let my wife Joan use to take a car-load of primary school children along the Crystal (broken windscreens) highway the 250 miles (400+ kms) to Mackay for a sports weekend. It was a pleasure to have to use the car, and I am sure the Lord used it to uplift my sprits as I went from one Parish task to the other. It was also economic rationalism – or a car that didn’t fall to pieces, or wear out, and it got us out of a deep financial hole. That Benz had captivated me and won over my wife!
And Geoffrey Rush drove one in 'Bran Nue Day'

Here's an update on my RHD 230 Auto Universal- as you can see a bare metal restoration has begun at a local specialist here in Cornwall, UK. I intend to restore it to its original colour grey (DB190) and luckily the interior is all complete and in good condition- it features a bench seat and the interior is red MBtex. Much welding to do not least to the roof sections, I've ordered new floor panels and inner/outer wings from Werner Karasch & Co in Germany and I plan to rebuild the car myself once the body is complete.

Hats off, that's a great project! Good that you ordered the parts in Germany before the Brexit, so you can avoid import taxes :laughing5: :laughing5:

I like the others find your project very interesting and encourage you to keep us posted with your progress.

This looks like an ambo (ambulance) version of the binz wagon with the high roof. What is the right rear side cut out for? perhaps for spare wheel access?

It is no mistake that they portrayed him as driving a Merc as the script writers had done there homework. Pity they got the model wrong.

Now my Binz is ready for the road.
For the first time I´ve been writing down every hour.
It took me 1.200 hours, but the car was in really bad shape.
The interior is finished, I just have no photo when it´s complete .
