What was the story behind the car and how you came to find it? And what had it been doing to get so rusty?!

Thanks!
Well, I put an ad in the lokal newspaper that I wanted to buy an old Merc.
When I saw the car I really think twice, do I have the power to restore her.
But anyway I bought her and after about one year the car was beautiful.
Those cars are very expensive i Europe, I kind of fell for the money.
I did sell the car.
But, but, but I did really miss that beauty.
After two years I found a new one. I was lucky, as you know they are very rare.
This time it was a mittelrot 190D 1965.
She looked like this when I took her home.
Hope you apologies my spelling, I´m swedish.

Image

I have transplant a roof from a sedan with sunroof.

Here is a photo from the interior how it looks before.

Image

And how it looks now.

Image

Whas she rotten, yea a little bit. The front was ok, but the rear was not so good :-)
Image

But now she´s a beauty.

Image

Image

Give me one more month, and she´s ready for the road.
I promise you that I will not sell this one.

Interesting to see what the final price will be.
I was paid 32.000 USD for my first Universal that I showed here.

You could get sunroof on the IMAs as well, thats why I took a roof from a sedan.
I´ve only seen one photo on a W110 Uni. with sunroof, guess it´s very rare.

The Universals are made in Belgium by IMA.
The Compact on the photo is built by Binz.
I can also tell you that in Sweden where I live, the Universal goes under the name Safari.

here is a roundie with the very unusual sunroof option. it's not actually rare in Ponton terms (they had webasto roofs as an option on the sedan) and there are one or two other combi's with the sun roof too.

New wagon couldn't be in better hands going off the job you did on the other two.
Is that a rectangular door compartment in the rear quarter?

That red wagon is a stunner! What is your paint colour? Looks very similar to my 190c which is mittelrot DB516.

Nice find too with the binz wagon - be interested to hear the story behind how you found it! Does that side door give access to the load compartment or is it for the spare tyre? Or is it just the worlds' biggest fuel flap?

Yes it´s 516 mittelrot.
It´s for the sparetire.
The car is very rusty, but it´s just to start welding
and one day it will be ready.

Looks pretty good in fact. Chris Trosch in the USA has a few station wagons too. He is the guy who bought that really rusty one in the UK a couple of years ago.

I've recently bought a project Universal. It's a 1966 230s RHD car in need of restoration. Originally Titanium Grey with red MB-Tex, the intention is to take it back to that colour. Luckily all the trim is in great shape and it came with all chrome etc. It must be one of very few left in the UK but if anyone knows differently please let me know.

I keep telling you, owing a Universal is common. You can buy them on every second street corner. Owning a Binz however is a very rare thing...

The rims on that universal are a bit different - are they MB rims? I think I've seen similar rims on w202s?

They look like these CLK 16" alloys but I would've thought the offset would be wrong... http://www.wholesalewheel.net/store/fac ... -1053.html
