2.3 16 ECU Upgrade HELP ! OBD1, OBD2 arrgghh !!!!

Post by aquaihoi » Mon 14 Oct, 2013 12:24 pm

Hey gang,

ok been doing some research on ECU upgrades for 2.3/16, Autoart and friends suggest Haltech Platinum pro . . . ok no problem, have also been reading on telemetry systems,
anyone used the iOS app Rev by devtoast http://www.devtoaster.com/products/rev/, this is really awesome, you can wirelessly get all car data and apply tune setups
from a iphone / ipad, the app is $39 and you need to buy a wireless dongle $150 - which plugs into the OBD2 port which sends the data via telemetry to your phone or ipad all
visually displayed and you can interact with your car - stationary or running - change tuning maps on the fly . . . now here lies the problem :

My 190e 2.3 is a 86' model, it has a OBD 1 port running off factory computer, I know that there is no standard in OBD 1 code as there is in OBD2, I know the merc 38pin OBD1 to 16pin OBD2 will not
work either since the obd1 code is not compatible with OBD2 scanners, now my question is :

1) If I upgrade the ecu to a aftermarket standalone unit which will be required for EFI & ITB conversion and all sensors are wired to this new ECU - will this new ECU output OBD2 code ? Can you recommend any ?

2) Which aftermarket ( preferably haltech ) ECU would output OBD2 code once wired up to sensors and would have an OBD2 connector ?

3) Is OBD1 / 2 dependant on engine or sensors or upgraded ECU - meaning if a get a new gen ECU and wire up the sensors on the car to the new ECU - will the ECU output OBD2 code if it supports it or will the
code be dependant on the sensors which would need to be new age as well ( if there is such a thing ).

Can somebody in the know shed some light on this please . . . no dramas if it cant be done . . . but it would be practical - and also very cool ! Thanks in advance. A.

My understanding is that the only Haltech ECU's that output to OBD-II are the Platinum Pro units (as you've suggested) which are only currently available as vehicle specific plugins. The Platinum Sprint series which is what you would currently have to use does not.

What is the problem with using a laptop to do the same?

Not entirely sure why you'd even bother when you're going to use a standalone ECU.

If you are removing the ke-jetronic there is nothing you can do with respect to the DTC codes which were stored in the KE ecu.

Hey guys, thanks for the input, I took the car to a company called Auto Art in melbourne http://www.autoartaustralia.comfrom recommendation from a good friend for a diagnostic, one of the head guys there suggested that I do not waste 800 bucks for a Kjet rebuild if I was going the ITB route, which is fair enough, they quoted me for my fuel tank to be cleaned and recoated with a coating that will never let it have rust again - I could get a new or reco 190 tank - but cosy ones a 75 litres as opposed to standard 50 something - so I will get the tank cleaned, stainless steel fuel lines - all for a good price - as there were rust particles in the kjet and only two people in oz that know them back to front inside out, so if anyone wants their details let me know - anyway - Adem suggested that he would utilise a Platinum Pro, after I told him I was told by a mate to use a Haltech E6X - E6k - he said the pro units are easier to tune / better - whatever - since I'm taking this all the way - PUT IT IN !

So apparently they can get a platinum pro working in there, I might pop by and talk to them in more depth about this - they build race cars, Porsches mainly, so they know a bit . . . now the reason as to why I am " bothering " . . . hmmmm . . . maybe because I am really bored and want to give my self a headache, maybe because this car has inspired me to go on a learning spree to get the most out of it . . . I really don't know . . . but what I do know is I would like a telemetry system in cabin concealed in the single din audio interface with a slide out touch screen, that allows me to monitor the system of the car and also to swap maps for different driving conditions . . . eg: Economy map / Sport Driving Map / Racing Map - because the car allows this level of flexibility - so why not have it at your finger tips . . . and it would look cool too, no laptops required etc. The other reason is - it is a challenge and I could share the info with like minded people etc. I really cannot justify why I would like to do it . . . but it must be important otherwise I wouldn't have thought of doing it . . . first you hit books :read2: then you hit car :banghead:  :banghead:  then you have fun  with angry street rod :angry5: :angry4: :angry5: :angryfire: - somethign like that . . . let you know how it all pans out . . .ok back to work.
