Alpine Way Vid

Post by AMG » Sun 01 Aug, 2010 12:23 am

Was driving back home from Melbourne on Wednesday - via every great backroad I knew. Anyway, the intended road I was going to come over the snowy was closed (elliot) So I had to head over the Alpine Way.

No Big deal - it was a nice if slightly longer drive, and with the car loaded right up it was a sensible option.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JwWZfDBTDI

The vid starts @ the beginning of the snowline and runs to Dead Horse Gap (roads 'summit') and I stopped the vid there.

in hindsight, I should have done the black spur video as well, and also let this one roll all the way down to crackenback. not to worry, there is always next time.

vid is just over 5 mins. nothing special, but worth a look.

Great sound - but what's all that white stuff on the side of the road? Never seen anything like that where I come from.

Your car sounds great!

Nice vid too, how did you mount the camera. It seemed very stable
Cheers,
Michael

The camera mount is a RAM mount - I have a few of them. I bought the first one for my GPS, then bought one for Nat's iPhone, then two more for camera mounts with different length arms etc. I feel it has a tendency to bounce a bit, but if you guys thought the vid was stable, I'd love to keep on using it with a new camera / video. the Canon is a bit cumbersome, and it is an SLR, so mounting it is not err, easy. Hence the 'short' run.

Next time I do an in-car vid, I'll try out a few different things. this was first attempt for me, so I'll get the hang of it eventually.

Now I have to go clean Stella, so I can crack out an exhaust vid for Steve & his KLSACT. :)

Nice vid Joe. I thought your Cossie was auto? It sounds to be manual in that vid (albeit with a heavy flywheel). Or have I just lost the plot? :)

That's an interesting mount. I didn't even know they made them like that.
Cheers,
Michael

hahaha !

You do know that mercedes-benz autos were always intended to be manually shifted, yes? There is a knack to it of course, decidedly German methodology, but rewarding if you learn how to move.

The reason it sounds so slow revving is a) I was taking it very easy - the video doesn't show how much black ice was on the road, it was interesting learning to drive on it, and b) the car was loaded up - back seats full and boot full of stuff from the trip down.

Next time I do a video I'll have to put some sort of foam over the microphone to dampen the wind noise - I tried a reverse mount on the boot of stella the other day and the video footage is awesome, but the windrush from the instant I hit second gear just killed the sound. a real pity.

I haven't driven that section in that direction since doing so in my Mini Clubman GT at night almost 30 years ago. We did however drive that section in the opposite direction to get to the MB Clubs national rally in Albury a couple of years back after holidaying in the Snowy Mountains.

There are some great roads in that part of the world. Another one was the drive from Albury via Bright and Mount Hotham across to Omeo via the Great Alpine Road on the way to Lakes Entrance on the same MB national rally.

If you enjoy driving roads like that, you need to get that Cosworth out and bring it along to some of the Classic Rally Club's events that "sf0999", "oz coz" and I have been enjoying.
