Olympics: Time to pull the plug?

Post by Ludwig » Tue 16 Aug, 2016 8:33 am

I thought that I was hearing wrongly when, on Q&A last night someone said that the Australian government had spent $40 million on the Australian SWIMMING team.
Surely not. I must have mis-heard. Surely no government would spend $40,000,000 on just the swimming team. But yep. There it was on the ABC news this time though only $38,000,000. Well that made me feel better NOT. It raises the question, how much of the people's money was spent on the other teams. Seems to me that while people are SLEEPING in the STREETs such waste is criminal. Isn't it time that we "Pulled the Plug"on the Olympics at least until such time as we can provide food and shelter for all Australians. Next Olympics we can say "thanks for the invitation but sorry.............we have other, more important things on which to spend our people's money." How many other cash-strapped Nations might follow. Reminds me of the time I was locked up in a holding cell, following a protest rally and we were all bursting for a pee but........delicate little souls hat we were, there was only one toilet in the corner with no walls or door. No one wanted to go first until one person could wait no longer, said "stuff this" and enjoyed great relief. Upon completion I turned to see almost eeryone else lined up to follow. Just takes one to start the ball rolling or in this case the pee flowing. Olympics NO THANKS. Perhaps later.

It certainly has become a lot more political (or maybe it always has been and I've just noticed it in more recent events). But certainly a lot of tension among some countries:

If anyone is going to be questioning the value of spending that much money on the Olympics, I think it will be the people of Brazil in about a weeks time...

Meanwhile, who will win?

My 3 cents:

38 million sounds like a lot. It would almost get you a decent house in Sydney. However, this is over 4 years:

and it amounts to 3 cents a month from every Australian.

What they need to work on is sledging. Mack Horton accusing Sun Yang of being a mere "drug cheat" is a bit weak. The French swimmer who said "he pisses purple" is giving better value for money. They need to pay some of that 38 mill. to get Merv Hughes in as a consultant:

Having spent part of my career building Public Housing, ranging from Rooming Houses in drug-fuelled St.Kilda, Townhouses in The Pines (Frankston North..the most depressing suburb of Melbourne) to the Richmond High-Rise (another drug-den), all I can say is $75m provided housing for 8+10+207 = 225 no. Residences..figure where I see our taxes should be spent whilst 35k + people are homeless(officially) in Victoria alone.....and no I don't vote Labour and sometimes only for the Greens..enough ranting FTM... :banghead:

Check out these pics of abandoned Olympic venues - the Athens ones are the most shocking as it was only 12 years ago! (the new Greek ruins!)

Hope Brazil doesn't suffer the same fate.

Did you see GRUEN tonight?
The advt which won the award and recived un-precedented audience applause questioned the morality of spending on Olympics while people suffered deprivation.
Didn't see it?
