Not a Benz

Post by treedoc » Sun 21 Jul, 2013 10:03 pm

Two things happened today,
Firstly I put SWMBO on a jet to Switzerland at 2 PM.
Secondly Shannon's Insurances had a car auction in Sydney at 3PM that included a replica late 1930's 3.5 litre, twin cam triple double Weber Maserati two seater roadster which I now own, see the piece of Italian art below.
To make room for the new beasty our white 280SL must go, any takers?

Geoff,

You don't waste any time do you? SWMBO had only been gone for one hour and look at what you got up to!

Wish I could help you out by taking the 280SL off your hands but I don't have enough space for what I already own.

Just wondering though, don't you think she may notice the new toy in the garage even if you do sell the 280SL before she returns?

Narr Greg you know what women are like I'll just tell her I gave the 280 a coat of red paint just before I duck.
Actually I was thinking of storing it in the lounge room, thats where you keep objects of high art.

Congrats and have fun with it ... and thanks for sharing the trick with the wife :laughing6: :laughing6:

Regarding the repaint: In case the asks about the missing hardtop, just tell her, that a terrible storm in Queensland blew it away ... :laughing6:

Well done! I went along to the auction and this car really is a fine piece of craftsmanship and a credit to the late builder.

I hope all goes well with the import approval on it, or did you get that sorted already?

Did they give you an idea of top speed on it?

I look forward to some action shots of this beauty in motion!

Cheers

Steve,
No approval yet, we are working on it.
Worst case we ship it back to NZ leave it on board and reapply
No idea of top speed, no intension of finding out, my guess would be 200 KPA+
Might run it in the Noosa Hill Climb just fast enough to beat a certain local Fraser Nash le Mans Replica

Small world! Was just talking to the losing bidder. He's very disappointed. Good luck with it. If you decide to sell it let me know. Ill pass your details on. He said I had it and some guy on the phone beat me.

Hi Maguire,
He would be really upset if he knew I had reached my absolute walk away limit, another $500 and it would have been his. Three previous Shannon's Auctions I've been to I was out bid on two and didn't get a bid in before passing my limit on the third. I know how he feels.

Congrats on the purchase Geoff, looks absolutely stunning! :love10:

You have to feel bad for Tim's mate missing out, but it sounds as though Geoff plans to drive it a lot more which does sound better than having it spend nearly all its time hidden away... :happy3:

Auctions can be an interesting experience. I can imagine Geoff how you must have felt, especially bidding over the phone. I purchased my 500SLC at a classic car auction back in 2006 and had one other person bidding against me. I can remember also just about reaching my limit when I won it, even though that amount was still well below the estimated value. In hindsight, it turned out to be a bargain as it has been a superb car and much better than I expected it could have been considering I could really only give it a visual inspection. The big problem at the time of the auction was that I was able to start it but not drive it. For all I knew I could have been purchasing a car that had a stuffed transmission or crabbed down the road. In its favour was the fact that, whilst it was far from being concours perfect, it presented as an original and genuine example, not to mention being an example of one of the rarest post WW2 Mercs, and one with a motorsport history.
